Benalcazar, Owusu, McFarlane, Carrizo?

I feel like there’s talent coming up. There’s probably kids at 11-14 right now that will shock us when they are 14-18.

Carrizo and McFarlane will not contribute to our senior team. Like Scally and Gio before them.

Owosu is 21 and still hasn’t broke through.

I think Nico is another Jasson but it’s something.

As the core of NYCFC vanishes anyone revisit the pretty quiet 2022 summer transfer window? (nothing against Pellegrini)
In comparison, Here’s what the MLS 22 champs did last summer.
  • Giorgio Chiellini (signed June 13 on a free transfer)
  • Gareth Bale (signed June 27 on a free)
  • Carlos Vela (re-signed as a Designated Player on June 28)
  • Sebas Mendez (trade from Orlando City for $350,000 in allocation money on July 19)
  • Denis Bouanga (transferred from Saint-Etienne as a Designated Player on Aug. 5

You mean like when we loaned our best player out in July?

GTFOH.
Yes, I mean exactly at that moment. Is that when you think Callens and johnson should have been sold?

I just don’t remember seeing any such posts on here or Twitter

If you’re going to loan out Taty, you’re giving up on winning the title. Which is exactly what I said at the time.

And guess what happened? We didn’t win the title. This isn’t difficult.

So at the time you wanted Johnson and Callens to be sold, you just didnt say it.

Gotcha

And just a footnote (not to pile on KJB but just to add a thought), the sentiment certainly at that time and as of very recently regarding Johnson was that he likely would stay (coming from both sides). It has become less certain over the last few weeks, but that is only a recent development. Callens was expected to leave and I believe they viewed it as getting max value on the field over several years from a key contributor and understanding that there is a natural life cycle to that where he is priced out at the very end.

We were all hoping for a Taty replacement who never came. And we didn’t expect Ronny to bail too. I think he’s saying if you’re going to give up. Just go full Monty.

That’s fair. I just don’t remember anyone saying that last summer considering the team’s place on the table, etc.

Hindsight is always 20/20

I don't really understand how we were going to get anything significant from selling those guys over last summer when they only had 3-4 months left on their contracts.
And as it is, we made it to the Conference Final, where we gave Philadelphia what-for. Were it not for a worldie save by Blake on the Callens header we would have been up 2-0 with 30 minutes to go. Were it not for us falling asleep on a free kick sub we still might have won regardless.

That's not too shabby, especially considering you could make the argument (and I do) the Union were the best team in the league last year. I can't imagine we would have gotten there without Sean John and Callens.

Besides, we're not an independent club in association football. We can't just build up a pile of money and go all Boehly and start signing people left and right. We're a franchise, a league-owned team which has to operate within strict roster rules. What you would like to do and what you're actually able to do can be two vastly different things.

Take the L dude. I was on the right side of this over the winter when Sands was loaned, not sold. I was on the right side of this over the summer when Taty was loaned, not sold.

None of us knew that Callens and Johnson were on expiring contracts. The fact that we will have lost our 5 best players from last year without a single dime in transfer fees is terrible business.

What L? They loaned out one player in jan and one in the summer. They didn't get rid of the entire core that summer or winter.

Which players did they loan out again? And which guys did they not re-up or transfer with one year left on their deals?

Except we did. Based on a very quick search only on “Johnson” and “Callens” in the 2022 Roster Thread, we discussed Callens’ expiring contract back in February and Johnson’s back in June.

Even if we wanted to sell them, we're not getting transfer fees for guys on expiring contracts in their 30's. The FO made the decision that the opportunity of challenging for another MLS Cup was worth more than the (very small) transfer fee those guys might have brought in had we wanted to move them. Personally, I think that was the correct decision.

Sure we haven't yet gotten transfer fees for Taty and Sands, but that doesn't mean we never will. We also have a ton of room under the salary cap right now, so it's really not that big a concern considering all the space we have. Also considering how negligible the salary cap space is for outgoing transfer fees, that's not really a major consideration.
