At the end of 2022, 538 ranked NYCFC 3rd in MLS with a 51.6 SPI and a 1.6/1.3 offense/defense ranking.
The first 2023 rankings are out and after all of NYCFC's departures, the club is now ranked 3rd in MLS with a 53.9 SPI and 1.7/1.3 O/D rankings. Worldwide, the 53.9 rating is good for 145th place which is a 17 spot jump.

Go figure.

if santi really is coming back with a long term contract, that's exciting. i guess with callens and johnson not in the picture, they could afford to give santi more money.

our midfield and attack is looking pretty good though some more depth pieces are needed. still a bit thin on defense (except for LWB where we are overloaded)
I doubt they'd offer Santi a long-term deal and assumingly a significant sum of money to be a half-season rental. If anything, maybe they put him in the shop window next summer. Or maybe he even stays a full two seasons and leaves in the 2025 winter window. Regardless, I'd assume 2023 is at least a lock.

For as much as we may not like it when it happens, this is why Taty and Sands' loans were good business — the club has advertised itself as a prime place to hone one's skills and move on to bigger things, and have made good on those promises. I would assume that will give us access to tons of quality young players.

I don't think it works that way. He probably goes through the Discovery process.

For example, Altidore played for the Red Bulls years before he returned to MLS with Toronto. This article says nothing about compensation to Red Bulls but does say he would have to go through Allocation Order. But Allocation is now dead and there is only Discovery rights. Maybe RSL put Ledezma on their Discovery list, but I believe that's the only way they get anything for him.

I think I might be wrong. The weird thing is, it looks like RSL might have more rights because they never signed Ledezma. Paul Arriola was in the LA Galaxy academy, played in Mexico while never signing with LAG, and then when he came back to MLS and DC, United paid $3M plus Garber bucks for his rights.
That’s what we had to do with Gloster. He never signed with NJ, but they retained his domestic rights and we had to send them some GAM.

Rumor is a DP deal for Santi?

Don’t love that.
I would mind if I thought the spot would otherwise have been used for someone even more dynamic and productive. So I can live knowing what we will get from him - young, talented and a solid contributor.

This isn't the choice before us at the moment, but which would you rather have?

DP Santi?

- or -

DP Callens?
DP Santi in a heartbeat because of the rest of the roster and age. Santi can grow into a big sale. Callens would at best deliver what we’ve already seen. I think at this stage of their careers, Santi is more of a player to build around than Alex.

* All props to Callens for everything he did for us for the past several years.

If it is DP Santi versus maybe a DP in July? I guess Santi

But Jesus Christ. What are they doing. It’s like they didn’t have a plan this winter other than allowing a bunch of guys walk for NOTHING.

We might be able to sign Santi as a DP but not at a high enough salary that he cant be bought down with some extra GAM/TAM on the books to accommodate another DP signing -- there shouldnt be a huge transfer fee to build into the salary amount.

We have this buy down conversation with every DP, yet they have never bought anyone down to add another DP. Until the team shows that they will actually use the buy down methodology it really doesn't matter.

Santi had 13 assists last season, 6th most in MLS. He is absolutely worthy of being a DP. he put up Maxi Moralez-like numbers in 2022, and he wasn't even the starting No. 10.

I think we always think of DPs as players we have to add as DPs, not as players who can be promoted into DPs, but Santi is young and improving. Would not surprise me if he becomes a consistent 15-assist player for us.
