Holes filled in last 1.5 years:
Callens/Martins
Johnson/Freese
Medina/Pellegrini
Sands/Haak
Shradi/Pereira
Thorarinsson/Cufre and O'Toole
Tinnerholm/Ilenic

A hole can be filled before the player leaves (eg Callens), and they're not necessarily like for like quality.

Holes open
Acevedo
Castellanos
Heber
Ibeagha
Latinovich
Moralez
Rocha
Rodriguez
Zelalem

Talles is outside the timeframe, but I think the club believes he is the Taty replacement. Plus several current trialists can fill the Zelalem role, whatever that was.

That still leaves 3-ish starters to replace (Acevedo, Morales and Rodriguez). Plus 1 spot starter CF, 2 backup CBs, and 1 all-purpose fill-in midfielder. Plus maybe you want one of the backup CBs to be starter quality depending on Chanot durability. No matter how you allocate who replaces whom though, we have at least 7 meaningful roster slots to replace. Of those maybe the new Rocha and 1 backup CB can also come from trialists. So at a minimum, we probably still need 5 significant acquisitions, counting everything in the most generous and optimistic way possible.

Do we have any trialists this preseason besides Turnbull? I may have missed that announcement sorry!

I'm using trialist in a non-specific sense to maean all of the players in column 3 of this post:

As per Bogert we are trying to get Richie Ledezma on loan from PSV. Interesting move, wouldn’t need a visa. There’s a decent player in him but he cannot stay healthy

i think he has not been injured for a few months now. he is just not getting minutes.

By your logic, Alfaro replaces either Ibby or Vuk.

I still have questions about LCB. But if the Santi news is true and we bring in Ledezma for competition, this team just went from one that would've squeaked into the playoffs to an MLS Cup contender. In a span of 90 minutes, I went from unsure about 2023 to about as optimistic as one can be. Still more work to be done, but this day has been by far the best of the offseason sans the stadium announcement.

Of course, that's assuming that Santi does in fact come back AND all parties are committed to the FULL season. Hopefully it's not one of those "we'll keep you/I'll stay here and see how the market is this summer" type of situations.

if santi really is coming back with a long term contract, that's exciting. i guess with callens and johnson not in the picture, they could afford to give santi more money.

our midfield and attack is looking pretty good though some more depth pieces are needed. still a bit thin on defense (except for LWB where we are overloaded)

Here are the big priorities for me, in order.
  1. CAM - starter (news today is good!)
  2. CB - starting quality CB to slot into a rotation with Chanot and Martins
  3. CM - starting quality CM to slot into a rotation with Parks and Morales
  4. Winger - solid backup winger - preferably left footed to fill in behind Gabby
  5. Striker - backup behind Talles Magno
  6. CAM - backup (news today is good!)
  7. CM - 1-2 more for depth behind Haak
I note that if Sands comes back, he alone could knock out 2 and 3.
