2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Brest Lover - Micah Richards and Thierry Henry jersey gifts go viral on Champions League coverage
the whole brest segment on this show is hilarious. we're all just adolescent boys on the inside...

  1. The loan is only until midseason and Lee has never had the stomach to play chicken by replacing a loaned player slot which would force him to scramble when the loan ends.
  2. The news release does not say that OHL is paying his entire half-season salary.
  3. Jovan occupies a U22 slot and I honestly don't know how a half season loan affects that, but even if it does open a U22 slot during the loan, circle back to #1 above.

The sample size is limited but I also think there is evidence that despite the assumption that CFG has deep pockets Lee mostly has to run net natural when it comes to transfer fees. The recent flurry of spending came after we got money for Taty and Gabby and the totals of what was spent lined up fairly closely (15M+7.5M in for Taty and Gabby, 8.5M+5M+7M+3M out for Jovan, Fernandez, Ojeda, and Bakrar). We did not spend any significant amounts the entire time Taty was on loan.

If this is true we are screwed. Lee blew all the money on prospects that look underwhelming or are already gone. Even if we going to get money back from a Jovan sale we are stuck waiting for him to be sold after any loans if they handle it the way they did with Taty.

Tell me again how any of this bullshit benefitted us. Lee is next on the chopping block and the fan base gotta start being more vocal about it.

I think Lee should have gone before Cushing or if Nick was going Lee should have gone with him. I never understood how Lee got away with so many terrible roster moves and the fans only complained about Cushing.

I do think the CFG strategy is going to change to some degree when we move into the new stadium, even if it’s short-term. That’s where they sell Etihad to the world and for that they will want to make sure the product on the field enhances the magnificent new stadium. And for the amounts they are seeking for the high-end seats/suites (which really are outrageous) they will need some marquee players. No one is paying 100k+ to watch some no name unproven kids.

Yes. This is clearly the plan. No one should expect any big name signings until the stadium opens. For the next season or two it will be developing (or trying to develop) young players to provide a base.

Maxi is incredibly popular with the fanbase - deservedly so - but he is the level of 'star' the team will have for the next two seasons.

I've noted it before and I'll note it again - NYCFC is a minor league team in a minor league, at least until the stadium opens. It is much easier to follow the team if one accepts that. If that isn't worth one's money or time, totally understandable, but it is the reality until 2027.

I don't think anyone thinks we should be signing Mbappe or Haaland. But if you spend whatever we spent on Mijatovic, make sure it's a player who WANTS TO BE HERE and who can fucking contribute. We have much smaller wiggle room due to MLS rules so we gotta fucking vet our player purchases. Man City can afford to leave 100 mil players on the bench. We've got an albatross that we're stuck with. What happens if he feels like Lommel is beneath him and he pouts again? Will we keep on being hamstrung until his contract runs out?
Will CFG will keep him stashed our books? Are they going to pull this shit again once the excitement of the stadium is gone?

I think this is right, except I suspect (only a guess) it might be that he has a budget above net neutral, meaning CFG will subsidize to a point.
And I'm more than fine with that. As far as we all know the club has been operating at a deficit for all 10 years. I don't blame ownership for wanting a lid on that.
The issue as you note is that Lee's Hit:Miss ratio lately has not been great, and the choice to send almost every player on loan before selling leaves us regularly running short.

I completely agree—that budget is entirely reasonable, especially considering the money they just poured into the stadium.

It’s disappointing how poorly the big signings have performed, but my biggest issue with Lee and CFG has always been their approach to risk. Given the limited budget, the more expensive the player, the greater the risk. Likewise, the younger and less experienced the player, the higher the uncertainty. Most MLS teams making big U22 signings usually mitigate risk by choosing one or the other. They either invest in 19- or 20-year-olds with 70+ career appearances—players with a track record—or, if signing less experienced prospects, they keep transfer fees in the $1M-$2M range.

Lee, on the other hand, maxed out the risk in both directions by spending heavily on three highly inexperienced 18-year-olds. That kind of reckless decision-making is baffling. CFG essentially gave him three swings to get on base, and instead of playing it smart, he’s out there swinging for the fences for no reason.

Most MLS teams have been absolutely terrible at signing u22. Very low percentage hit on them league-wide. It's a very risky investment by nature. If you look at a team like LAFC who has done relatively well, they move on very quickly if a player doesn't work out, just like we did with Jovan. Ojeda and Julian shouldnt be written off as busts. Underlying numbers still very good last year, obviously Lee will need to see them produce with increased minutes this year.

The bigger issue is that we have two prime roster spots open and with teams signing serious firepower this offseason, feels like we could be left behind even if Ojeda and Fernandez step up.

The problem with Maxi is not his level of stardom but his age. At his prime he was top 5 and maybe top 3 in the league at his position. But he is 38. The same we used pine for a team of Alex Rings we would do well enough to aspire to a team of Maxis. Midpoint between 16 and 36 would be ideal.

I made this months ago so the players are probably a bit outdated but at the time outside of Miami, no one was taking risks the way we did. As a comparison of risk, the chart shows the transfer fee spent divided by the number of professional appearances a player had made prior to coming to MLS. Miami made one riskier investment but they are also spending in other places on their roster where is out U22 slots are the only place we have spend significant funds in the last 2 years. CFG is not just behaving the same as other teams in the league, they are outliers.
