2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Not to nitpick your point but Bakrar wasn't even cheap. I think Lee paid $3M for him and then $8.5M for Jovan. He didn't even deliver on cheap. He missing on all three in my book.
7m for Ojeda (3 goals) and 4.5 for Julian Fernandez (2 goals, 2 assists) according to transfermarkt as well. Shame.

this transfer silence is deafening.

especially as we watch other teams make big moves for impact players. i understand there's plenty of time to bring a player in, but signing so late means waiting for a visa and no preseason. then we'll have that excuse thrown at us.

Especially as the rest of the conference continues to improve. We’ll get the visa excuse, we’ll get the it’s hard to build in salary capped league excuse. Doesn’t seem to stop anyone else from improving (or trying to improve) on what they already have.

The rest of the league missed the we are the selling league memo.

Thanks to FootyLovin we have plenty of evidence the FO loves to sit on its hands until the last possible minute

I'm honestly not expecting much. Lee was clear he felt the roster was good at the end of last season. Unless the Sands or Jovan departures change things I don't think we have any big moves on the horizon but I'd love to be wrong.

There are not a lot of moves to make. Yes we can maybe sign someone to replace Talles, we can sign someone to replace Sands, and we should bulk up at both fullback spots. Otherwise, we've re-signed Maxi, signed another backup goalie ... there are not other moves to make. The forward, winger, and attacking midfield spots are handled, aside from a Sands replacement the defensive midfield is set with Parks and Perea, and the centerback positions are filled with Martins, Risa, Strahinja, and Haak.

Our success this season will primarily happen if the young players we signed last year start to blossom. If they don't, we're in trouble. If they do, we're a contender for the top of the conference.

True, but for reference this is a Lee thing. Reyna favored the winter window, rarely signed anyone of import in the summer, and the winter business was evenly spread out. Before FootyLovin started his tracking I had been doing something similar, and I have timelines for 2017-2019:

By 2/1/17 we signed 8 players.
By 2/1/18 we signed 7.
By 2/1/19 we signed 5.
This includes all types of player acquisitions: MLS trades, international transfers, trialists, USL players, Super Draft and DPs, maybe others.

With the caveat that I might have missed something, the winter signings that took place after the season started are
2017 - None
2018 - None
2019 - Heber
Now it seems to be routine.

Several things shook up our roster process, including the timing of acquisitions: Covid, Lee replacing Reyna, regular Academy signings (Sands was summer 2017), and the U22 initiative. Also from 2015-2020 the season started in early March, in 2021 April (Covid hangover), and from 2022-2025 it has started the last weekend in February. January 30 used to be 4-5 weeks before the season started. This year it is 3 weeks and a day before the opener.

I also agree with gbservis and ZYanksRule that we should not expect many moves, and probably nothing big. Maybe if the Talles loan is resolved we get a DP in the summer with a third of the season left. Our biggest roster upgrade over last season might be a healthy Jones all season. Is he in training?

We need additional impact players and we need DEPTH. we're gonna be playing a lot of games this summer. unless the club and jansen are happy to just send out the homegrowns since they are now permitted to play in all cup competitions, we are just going to exhaust our guys and have nothing left for the playoffs (if we get there).

haven't checked all socials, but based on club photo galleries, he's still in individual training only. i probably wouldn't expect him to make a return to the field until sometime in march at the earliest. but that's ok. definitely dont' want to rush his recovery.

My concern with relying on young players is that most develop incrementally. Last season, Ojeda and Fernandez looked like below-average MLS players. They have talent and will likely improve, but the realistic expectation is that they progress to being average or slightly above-average MLS players. A leap to becoming true difference-makers would require something exceptional.

This team isn’t lacking in average MLS players—it’s lacking top-end, star-level talent. If Fernandez improves to Wolf’s level, does that meaningfully elevate the team?

A real improvement over last season is more likely to come from breakout years by 2-3 of the more experienced players—Wolf, Keaton, Bakrar, Perea, and especially Samti. If some of them take a big step forward and the younger players develop into reliable rotation options rather than fringe benchwarmers, then we might be in good shape.

Yeah, I don't expect a marquee name, but I expect signings that will actually see the field at some point. And that may involve people leaving, which is also expected.

We have to get another center mid now that Sands is gone. That's as high a priority as we've had in the recent past.
This. The loss of Sands without a comparable replacement would outweigh the gain from any improvement from some of our kids. In addition, if (WHEN) we don’t sign a 10+ goal lock up front, our only hope is Jones being healthy (as MG noted) and/or a new and different Bakrar showing up. I hope coach likes jazz clubs.

having a healthy jones back and hopefully one who hasn't lost a step, will be very helpful in attack. having him and martinez running at defenses will be super scary for any backline to deal with. pace and fearlessness to go forward. a season or two like that and jones will be off to europe before we know it. but i sure hope he comes back better than ever.

This, all day. It's all a question of whether Pascal can unlock the talent on our squad. (Of course, that assumes the talent is there to be unlocked.)
