When you sign oldsters sometimes you get Messi and sometimes you get Pirlo.
Intuitively I would expect scorers to degrade more, but Messi, Suarez, Zlatan etc seem to defy that. Even Lampard, who arrived late and hurt and got hurt again was prolific when he played. What are the non-Pirlo examples of string pullers and table servers who came to MLS in mid-30s and how did they perform?
And regardless, if you're going to play <20 games I want goals when you play. Lots and lots of balls going in to nets. Playing half a season with a brilliant play maker just messes you up when you can't play that way when he's out. Again, I love Maxi, but his partial presence just delays the time when we either get a true full time replacement or Santi fully grows in to the role (if he ever will).
I think the major issue with Pirlo is that we needed him to defend and he just didn't have the legs for it. Someone with more Man City knowledge than me can chime in if I'm wrong but I think KDB typically plays further up the pitch with holding mids behind him like Rodri or previously Fernandino. I think in MLS you play him as a CAM and give him minimal defensive duties, just let him run the show and bang in goals.
I'm torn. KDB's a bit older than I would like but at least he would be interesting to watch. If its between KDB and a 28-year-old Maxi 2.0 type with the skills Maxi had when he arrived I want Maxi 2.0. If its KDB or a DP like any that we have signed since Maxi or just sitting on the DP spot for a year or two as this team occasionally does I'll take KDB.
