2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

When you sign oldsters sometimes you get Messi and sometimes you get Pirlo.

Intuitively I would expect scorers to degrade more, but Messi, Suarez, Zlatan etc seem to defy that. Even Lampard, who arrived late and hurt and got hurt again was prolific when he played. What are the non-Pirlo examples of string pullers and table servers who came to MLS in mid-30s and how did they perform?

And regardless, if you're going to play <20 games I want goals when you play. Lots and lots of balls going in to nets. Playing half a season with a brilliant play maker just messes you up when you can't play that way when he's out. Again, I love Maxi, but his partial presence just delays the time when we either get a true full time replacement or Santi fully grows in to the role (if he ever will).

I think the major issue with Pirlo is that we needed him to defend and he just didn't have the legs for it. Someone with more Man City knowledge than me can chime in if I'm wrong but I think KDB typically plays further up the pitch with holding mids behind him like Rodri or previously Fernandino. I think in MLS you play him as a CAM and give him minimal defensive duties, just let him run the show and bang in goals.

I'm torn. KDB's a bit older than I would like but at least he would be interesting to watch. If its between KDB and a 28-year-old Maxi 2.0 type with the skills Maxi had when he arrived I want Maxi 2.0. If its KDB or a DP like any that we have signed since Maxi or just sitting on the DP spot for a year or two as this team occasionally does I'll take KDB.

Good guy. But with 4 keepers on the roster, him being the oldest, this was bound to happen, i think.

Hope he finds success in DC and earns that extra 100K for us... just not against us.

If we have to face him we should know how to attack him. Shoot often and crash the box for the inevitable rebound.

This is our exposed list for the expansion draft.

  • Thiago Andrade
  • Monsef Bakrar
  • Rio Hope-Gund
  • Thiago Martins
  • Jovan Mijatović
  • Maxi Moralez
  • Birk Risa
  • Tomás Romero
  • Strahinja Tanasijević

San Diego will pick 5 players total from the 29 teams. I was looking at previous expansion drafts, it's usually low-salaried roster players like Kevin O'Toole. He was our biggest risk. Tanasijevic is probably our highest-risk player of being picked, but I can't imagine anyone else is really at risk of being selected unless they go with Romero for a backup goalie.

Most of these teams don't want someone else's DPs and U22s, they want to scout their own big pieces.

how can they put rio on the exposed list when he's not longer contracted? or is he still contracted until end of december so they used the spot? weird but ok.

shocked they put jovan on there and risk eating that transfer fee.

At the risk of Shwafta'ing it, I think of ALL the people on this list, the least likely to be picked is Mijatovic. Even if they have that whole fee thing, they would never take the rsik of no one actually being interested and then being saddled with his salary.

have to remember that SD can pick and trade or sell. they don't have to keep him on their roster. So, if their people work fast, maybe they can find a buyer in europe and cash in.

Let's see. So, by process of elimination, we are protecting the following.
  1. Andres Perea
  2. Santi Rodriguez
  3. Julian Fernandez
  4. Alonso Martinez
  5. Hannes Wolf
  6. Kevin O'Toole
  7. Augustin Ojeda
  8. Mitja Ilenic
  9. Matt Freese
  10. Keaton Parks
  11. Malachi Jones

Wait...what about Magno and Acevedo?

Much of the decision into whether to keep or expose a player involves his salary. If a high salary guy is taken - even a good one - the team will feel confident it can use that money to secure a replacement.

I would not like our captain to be taken, but we could certainly find a replacement for $2.4M in salary a year.

I am very surprised Risa is exposed, but he does make about $750K per year. Tanasijevic is getting $308K.

Our midfielders are the core of our team, but very well compensated. Sands $1,058K; Parks $970K; Perea $642K.

Wolf is on $1.5M. I remain surprised they didn't expose him, but maybe they didn't have an option to do so.

And 12. Acevedo

wow. forgot he was even on the roster. looks like he recently returned from his injury. wonder if the club will send him on loan again or see if he can contribute with us in a crowded midfield.

It's a little hard to know if it's him, or Andrade or Talles Magno, or what.

magno is still on loan until june. andrade and acevedo loans end this month. maybe that's why no magno?

randomly - surprised mitrita is still listed on our roster on the club website.

Well, Magno and Acevedo seem to be protected but Andrade is not. Maybe MLS screwed up the list? Maybe we kept a 13th? Maybe one of them was transferred out?

Also I don't see Lee being this much or a hard case, but I'm enjoying this imaginary conversation between him and Jovan:

- How can you leave me unprotected in the expansion draft?
- Well, it's not like you ever showed you really wanted to be here anyway.
- But the rest of the US is even worse! Where is San Diego?
- As far away from Serbia as anywhere in the country.
- [looking up SD on phone] Well, at least it's warm, on the ocean, sunny...
- or they can trade you to Minnesota.
