Someone in the TR facebook group mentioned that Lampard is the likely candidate. He said that this summer Lampard will be owed around 2 million. If we buy him down and open a DP spot then we won't miss out on the summer transfer window. We'd be able to bring in a new DP for the remainder of the season, thus giving that player time to learn the system for the following year.

I think it can only work if Frank willingly retools his contract to take less money.

We're allowed to buy out 1 contract a year. Have we done that? I don't think so. We've only waived people. We could just buy out his contract we're paying him not to play anyway. Might as well give us flexibility to bring in someone useful.

I wonder if the MLS corporate handbook was updated to say any unused buyouts during the calendar year can be carried forward to the next - much like carrying forward vacation days? Would actually make it quite interesting if a club had banked 5-7 years worth (I.e. 5-7 buyouts) and pulled the trigger all at once if their team sucked.
