Blues Again Pursuing Spanish Gk, Iker Casillas

That's a misnomer. Those two choices aren't false, they just aren't all off them - there's a difference.
That's the very definition of false choice: "A false dilemma (also called false dichotomy, false binary, black-and-white thinking, bifurcation, denying a conjunct, the either–or fallacy, fallacy of exhaustive hypotheses, the fallacy of false choice, or the fallacy of the false alternative) is a type of informal fallacy that involves a situation in which only limited alternatives are considered, when in fact there is at least one additional option."

I understand there might be other options, but it seems this is actually realistic. Johansen might deserve a chance (long overdue), but he's not someone you bet the farm on and tell Casillas "no thanks, we're all set, we have this guy."

lol no...casillas is past it...his blunders this year are showing that...hes turning 35 !! saunders is only 1 year younger come on....garbage move if they do it. give it to johansen, unless casillas is ok being 3rd GK

Don't go all Lawyery on me....

Q. What do Jason Kreis and Patrick Vieira have in common?
A. They both think Josh Saunders is a better keeper than Eirik Johansen.

And yes... just maybe.... despite what the coaches think... EJ could be an upgrade over Saunders. But anyone who thinks that EJ is going to make a substantial difference and solve our problems in the back is just projecting all their hopes and dreams onto a blank screen. Nobody on this forum has any evidence to show that EJ is some huge improvement waiting to be unleashed, and there is a fair amount of evidence that he isn't. Iker, despite his occasional struggles for a Champions League team, would be a big upgrade.

on contraire mon frere..... I know for a fact that Johansen will never launch a goal kick perpendicular to the field of play a good 5 feet in front of the Left Back and 3 feet above his head. That's not projecting.

While I agree that he'd be an upgrade, goalkeepers in MLS are absolutely not worth a DP spot. I know Iker is a huge, huge name with a fantastic legacy, but it's just not a position worth putting so much cap space towards. It's relatively easy to find a starting quality goalkeeper in this league.

I still wonder whether the team ever contacted Manchester United about a loan of Victor Valdes, who was just rotting on their bench, and who for a time had even been banished from training with the first team. United eventually loaned Valdes to Standard Liege.

I believe that Valdes will be out of contract at the end of this season. Surely he'd command a much lower salary than Casillas would (though, of course, he'd take up an international spot). Valdes (who turned 34 in January) is almost a year younger than Casillas (who will turn 35 in May) and Saunders (who turned 35 in March). Which is to say that none of these guys is too old, as 35 for a keeper is the equivalent of 30 for an outfield player.

Valdes would be a huge grab if as a non-DP.

To be fair we don't have evidence because he hasn't been given a start in a regular season match. His only start was a US Open Cup match that featured the likes of Pablo Alvarez on our lineup, so not exactly the best team ahead of him.

When Saunders ranks 19th out of 20 in the league in save percentage, there's not much room to do worse and plenty of room to do better. Unless Saunders has consecutive clean sheets, there's no reason Johansen shouldn't get at least one start before May.

Especially looking at next week with games on Wednesday and Saturday

Any thought that Johansen would get his start away from Yankee Stadium so there wouldn't be a dramatic fan reaction against him in person?

It's not out of the realm of possibility but next week just makes so much more sense. You'd be able to give Saunders some rest and use it as an excuse to start Johansen.
