Sims joined the Cavaliers in 2012, helping grow revenues by double-digits for two straight years prior to a run of four consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2015-2018 where the Cavs ranked at or near the top of the NBA in every revenue category.

Speaking of his new position, Sims said:

“I am excited and honored to begin this leadership position at New York City FC and City Football Group. There’s no better time to be a part of soccer in the United States and NYCFC has quickly become a key pillar within the League. With the sport growing so rapidly in the U.S., and with City Football Group’s original global proposition, this is the place to be.

Coming from the Cleveland Cavaliers doesn't inspire much confidence, LeBron was the only thing that made them relevant.

It’s not about the cavs. It’s about running a professional front office in a top league. And also the years in the NBAs main office. Sports biz is incestuous. People move from similar jobs between leagues all the time. Hopefully he’s smart enough to realize the ticket BS and how they are pissing off their STHs. That’s pretty much his job.

It's possibly impressive that he grew revenue in his first two years before Lebron's return when the Cavs were terrible. I'm sure this is why they started it the way they did. On the other hand the NBA has been growing like crazy for the last decade so who knows what was him vs just riding the wave.

More generally I don't know what to think about the main selling point being: this guy is great at generating revenue, he can even do it after the teams beloved star player leaves and the team completely stinks. The bigger questions for me are does he know about getting a stadium built, continuing to build a fan base, soccer in general?

Neither does this:

Same snipit shwafa pointed to jumped out at me. How is that a positive? Its like saying if he was a farmer he squeezed the most milk out of his cows....... well...... who are the cows in our situation? My teets are sore just thinking about it.

Hopefully this is what we need with a seasoned US Sports corporate type, rather than someone known for his NYC political connections.

I’m also wondering if Patricof stepping down means he did his job and the stadium is now on track.
Exactly.

What's interesting here is the change in direction. Patricof is a connected New Yorker whose hiring suggested a focus on pulling the political levers necessary to secure a stadium.

Brad Sims is a marketing guy. He's worked on ticket sales and corporate opportunities. This suggests a focus on building the brand in New York, which is something many of us have been looking for.

The Cavs front office isn't really known for it's high levels of organization and sound decision making they fired their GM right before the NBA draft two seasons ago. A lot of it is attributed to their owner being terrible but still this guy isn't coming from the Spurs or one of the other NBA teams that are known for having an outstanding FO.

I agree a focus on branding is a positive direction. I'll give him a chance. Experience is a plus but I do worry that the number of things competing for people's attention and $$ in Cleveland is substantially different that it is in NYC, he will need to adapt.

Y'all are sleeping on the key paragraph:

"Sims has been an avid soccer fan from a young age and was part of the 69,000 strong crowd at the Rose Bowl during the opening weekend of Major League Soccer’s inaugural season in 1996. He has been following the League’s growth as well and international soccer ever since."

Could be bullshit but at least it's the right bullshit.

I don't think the marketing and ticket sales guys have anything to do with Hiring/Firing the GM. Nor any sporting decisions for that matter. And I hope this guy Sims isn't either for NYCFC. The only questions are did merchandise sell and did he get butts in the seats, did people buy the food and drinks once they went to the game? Maybe negotiating the local TV rights too?

i dont see it that way at all. I has more confidence in Patricof BECAUSE he had the nyc connections which are needed here to do anything really. I see it that he was given the chance and failed and now he is removed. This guy i feel is good hire if we had a stadium already and were hurting in attendance.

I dont see it as good thing if Patricof was let go. If he did secure the site then he would of stayed to have his name associated with the stadium breaking ground and being the guy that secured it.

But did Patricof leave, or he's now moved to the board of directors??? https://www.frontrowsoccer.com/2018...of-will-leave-as-nycfc-president-in-december/

I'm sure when there is a stadium announcement, Patricof will be front row center and anyone who speaks will thank him for his efforts and give him credit.

the optics of it just seem like he was not successful. doesnt it look better if it said CEO Patricof instead of Board Member Patricof. Im still not convinced he has it secured.
