English Premier League 2023/24

MLS on AppleTV+ is great, at least from a technical perspective. Great value.

Same with MLBtv, although I need to set my VPN to Germany to watch the Mets. But I absolutely get my money's worth through the season. I watch every game.

Peacock ... eh, not so much. I find it just shocking they don't stream all the Premier League games live. They also abandoned the stellar NBC Sports Network interface they were using on that site for the Prem and use some less than spectacular presentation technology now. I'm not exactly blown away.

Really weak business sauce.
I’m not going to say that I do it but there are IPTV options that are very inexpensive and allow you to watch games from anywhere in the world.

Hypothetically, there may have been an instance last week where someone in the US using an IPTV was watching a Bundesliga match that his friend in Frankfurt couldn’t watch because it was PPV there. So they FaceTimed to watch together…. Hypothetically

I've thought about it, and I've looked at Fubo too. But truth be told, if I have MLS and MLB, everything else is extra. I'm able to get the ESPN player to work well enough to watch Stuttgart and the rest of the Bundesliga too. Everything else is gravy.

Hoo Boy. I watched the Manchester Derby yesterday at the gym through 75 minutes and didn’t go back to watch the final 15’ until today. What a mess at the mothership. They looked about as energetic as the hockey Rangers do right now.

Lots of theorizign on EPL Reddit that the pending financial penalties are sapping the players’ commitment. I wonder if the problems at CFG HQ will trickle down to us. Best case is that Pep decides he wants a new challenge in NYC. Worst case is that the malaise spreads beyond Manchester though it’s hard to imagine they wil actually run short on cash for things like the stadium.

What do we think?

What happens at Man City has absolutely nothing to do with us. Why would them struggling cause us to struggle?

CFG runs us. If they are in disarray it could trickle down. Also ownership groups get tired of their playthings when they aren’t fun any more or have maxed their value, and move on. Or management decides to flee/outstays its welcome/dynasties end and the are replaced with new management. It’s less likely with CFG because they won’t run out of money and sportswashing is a long term project, but it happens.

You're talking from a business standpoint? I would think they have more strategic thinking than that, but I suppose it's possible. I actually think it's more likely that a season like this intensifies their desire to win and makes them overspend on players to put Man City back at the top of the table. This ownership group doesn't have a lot of experience with a season like this, and I get the sense they will want to get back to the top as fast as possible.

Just want to say that as a City fan I'm not terribly concerned (although definitely a bit bummed). The past several months they've lost quite a lot of their key players to injury and are definitely in a bad spell at the moment but the team is still one of the best in the world. They may not win the league this year but they're still well capable of being in the top four by the end of the season. Not saying they won't go spend to improve but not really panic time in my opinion.

The EPL reddit is looking at things through the lens of hatred for that club and aren't being objective. City have an aging squad, numerous injuries and players with insane amounts of minutes on their legs from so many competitions. They've won four league titles in row, a UCL and reached numerous other finals along the way. (Side note: I also believe Peps style of managing wears players down. It's so intense. His final years at clubs have always been "subpar" for his standards, but I have no evidence of that.) These players are just gassed. A bad spell was bound to happen and people are excited to just pile on because they've been chomping at the bit for years to mock city fans. They finally have the ammo. Two months of bad soccer doesn't mean that CFG is about to explode. Silly to think that.

I don't think it will ever impact us either. Same owners, but infinite amount of resources. They've proven that they want what's best for their image. I may not agree with the roster construction with our team, but I will never be worried about resources at our disposal.
