General MLS Discussion

He didn't play up to his potential last season. But they spent a significant fee on him for MLS and he was in the WC winning squad. Which of our current players players can win you a game in that fashion?
I'm not asking to spend that kind of money but with all we hear about the CFG scouting network, it's malpractice for us to start the season with this squad.

I agree. unfortunately, we are not top of the pecking order in CFG. If there is a top prospect, he's going to europe or maybe even brazil, before he comes to MLS. that's not to say CFG won't spend money on us. I just think their plans for us are different than an owner who only has one soccer team to worry about.

IMHO therein lies the problem. We don't need a top prospect. We need a couple of veteran types who can step on the pitch and boss the game. That's why I was whining like a mental patient all off season for Pozuelo or a Pozuelo type of player to be signed.

Not top prospect, solid guys. Anything better than w.e this is.

Heber scored for Seattle and was instrumental in another goal… sigh

I wish him long life, happiness, health, and love.
I also hope he suffers a string of intermittent excruciating losses at Toronto, with just enough occasional success to keep thinking he and the team have turned a corner, but no. Honestly I was not sure what I would feel until I saw how they lost last night and I couldn't srop smiling until I thought about our game.
I feel about Johnson about how I felt about Steve Spurrier when he returned from the NFL and took a job with S. Carolina, division rivals with Florida. That season, he came to Gainesville both for a celebration of one of our teams and as the opposing head coach. I said when he’s around as the opposition, I will boo him at the top of my lungs, but otherwise I will cheer. I don’t think he’d have wanted it any other way.

Donny actually discussing pro-rel in MLS!

He’s right that US needs more quality clubs to make it work or relegated teams just find themselves in a year long purgatory then return to MLS to send a few other poor teams there. An effect pro-rel could have is increasing investment in lower teams hoping to follow the “wrexam” formula. So then it’s a chicken/egg argument. Institute it hoping it spurs investment in lower leagues. Or wait till there’s enough MLS teams/quality USL teams to split into 2 leagues. He’s honest that this question is a generation away, but it’s refreshing he’s discussing it & will be interesting to see it unfold.

I say 15-20 years give-or-take before we see a real, genuine discussion on the matter.

I can't see it ever happening as much as many fans want it. What is the value proposition to the current MLS ownership to put their investments at risk? Even if you got agreement on the concept you will then get stuck on the salary rules as the richest clubs are going to want the salary cap to go away so they can use their money to prevent relegation and the less well-off clubs are going to fight against that because it will put them at greater risk for relegation. The whole concept is a total pipe dream.

Oh yeah, but in 15-20 years it's a completely different world than now. We're talking multiple decades since owners founded a club.

In 15-20 years the league might even be able to function without a salary cap (or higher cap) without all the teams going bankrupt, if the sport kicks off in america more than it has to this point.

But we’ll be competing with the moon league by then.

Ben Sweat just singlehandedly helped Portland score a goal tonight against Sporting KC. With he and Khiry Shelton playing for Sporting, can we interest Peter Vermes in one Justin Haak?
You don't want to lose our most recent Heineken MOTM, do you? LOL

Nice broadcast on this one though, eh? I'm totally sold on the AppleTV deal now (not that I wasn't before). The 360 show yesterday literally got better every segment. And the game announcers have all been really good. Great sign they put all this together so quickly.

saw this on youtube... found it interesting. also made me laugh that an MLS exec thinks this of Philly Union.

the video was based on the athletic's yearly survey to pick the MLS cup winner.

one MLS cup exec:
The thing is, they're not even that fucking good. it kind of hurts me to pick them. All they do is kick the shit out of you. They're always ready to play, that's great, that's good coaching, all that stuff. But they're just not great. They have a way of doing things and they're consistent, but it's not like the quality is amazing. So it hurts me to pick them, but they've kind of earned it."

I think it's an unfair assessment. they don't have a great and beautiful style but they literally destroyed teams last year and they have talented players, all on one of the lowest budgets in the league. but i still think it's hilarious.

It was also used as motivational fodder by the Union because of course.
