General MLS Discussion

Last week an Austin fan on twitter cheekily pointed out that NYCFC was the only team to beat Cincinnati 5-0, so obviously ...

But yeah, regardless of the opponent, better to win by a lot than any other option. Still, I've learned you need to wait 8-9 games before judging who had a good (or bad) start, and that's all it tells you -- someone had a good start and looks good early.
I remember when Jason Kreis' Orlando had an amazing start and people started to proclaim how great he was and how messed up our organization was. They absolutely collapsed after that 10ish match hot start.

Interesting item in Doyle's column today. DC United led the league by winning 9 penalty kicks last year, while only being called for 2. This year they already have 1 PK in each game.

My semi-informed guess is PKs are mostly a factor of randomness mixed with player reputation. I don't know if anyone on DC is winning most of the PK calls the way Josef did for Atlanta a few years ago, or if they are generally spread around. Ola Kamara takes all of them. Nobody on their roster stands out to say, "of course he gets a lot of PK calls."

Atlanta had something like 20 PK’s that year - Josef basically was getting them one almost every game. It was downright ludicrous.

I'm listening to the Galaxy v. Seattle and good lord are people pushing the LA Galaxy hard. They won last minute against NYCFC at home getting very favorable calls, they won 1-0 to an expansion club who's coach described the team as "screwed". The announcers are talking as if the Galaxy "may not be for real" because they are down a goal in Seattle as if we should have thought they the team to beat this year.
Oh Atlanta, oh LAFC, oh LA Galaxy...

MLS was pushing ths goal on the home page as a "BEAUTIFUL" JOGO BONITO TEAM GOAL.

It's fine, but six passes all in the Seattle end is not really special.

Yeah, how about our ball movement on the Magno goal. Starting with Thiago 2 winning an aerial that winds up at Magno's feet and then six passes from there til he puts it into the back of the net.

If the most marketable player in the league played on our team, they would be pushing us as much too (well, if we had a soccer specific stadium)

Doesn't change the fact that you can tell the Revs aren't going to get lucky again this year with results, as already twice they've had a change in fortune to what would have happened to them last season.

first off, Revs are still a very talented team and should comfortably make the playoffs in the East.

that said, regression to the mean for sure. Even Bruce knew that they were getting a ton of results fall their way last year. Last year it was the Revs winning the game in the 90th minute, not the other way around.

that means our luck should increase?? YES??? does it work that way? or did we use it all up in the playoffs last year?

also - watching the portland v austin game... dickerson is the ref. he's been terrible and has not given a yellow for delaying a free kick. what a dick----erson.

I don't get how one has to do with the other.

The revs twice this year in situations where they would have won by a scraped margin have bottled it. Last season their Portland game would have ended 2-1, and today's game would have ended either 2-1 after RSL's first goal, or 3-2 where the Revs score the third, not RSL. So I'm of the opinion that we'll see this trend continue.

You're saying last year Revs had a lot of luck and this year they are regressing toward the mean.

Last year, we had a bad luck where we lost games at the death or on bangers out of no where. So maybe our luck will change this year where we don't lose at the death (i know we did already vs LAG but that's just one time).
