General MLS Discussion

Usual Athletic paywall, so I won't summarize the whole thing, but these survey results are fascinating and here are some highlights:
  • Castellanos came in second (4 votes) for most talented player in MLS behind Vela (5). Comment, “What I love about him, he’s just such a bastard,” said one exec. “He’s got that killer instinct. He’ll step on your head.”
  • Blake beat Turner for best goalkeeper, 11 votes to 7. Johnson tied for third with 1 vote.
  • Seattle and NYC tied for who will win MLS cup, 5 each. Shield vote was Seattle 6, NYC and Orlando 3 each.
  • Arena won best coach with 8; Deila got no votes.
  • Deila topped the vote for MLS coach most likely to take a job abroad with 6.
  • Lagerway ran away as best CSO with 13 votes.
  • Ned Grabavoy! (POR, 5 votes) tied with Craig Walbel (Seattle) for best #2 executive.
  • Quote re roster rules: “I mean, GAM, TAM, what the fuck?,” said one executive. “Just have an amount you can utilize, don’t make it so needlessly complicated.”
  • Should MLS favor in-league balance or comparative global competitiveness level: As one executive put it, this is “the existential question of every MLS board meeting.”
  • There is a consensus that every team cheats on roster/salary rules in a low-level way (eg maybe paying for ancillary housing costs) and 25-50% are more than $100k above salary limits. Miami not a lone outlier. There is no auditing function.
  • MLS is in top 8-12 leagues worldwide, but in that range MLS teams are generally better than 80-90% of the league but clearly below the best. EG, Ajax is better, but MLS teams could beat Heracles and others.
There is lots more. Really, a lot. I would not include this much if there were not a lot more. If you were thinking of getting an Athletic trial, consider it now. Plus there is a good amount of other new season content.

Charlotte has light blue kits whose color is infinitely superior to ours. Just a slightly deeper and sharper shade, so it doesn’t look like clothes for toddlers or a pastel you would see on a senior citizen tracksuit.

Also Fuchs was fouled in the box.

Austin looking like a goal machine. Of course it was against FCC and Miami... But at least they dropping goals on bad teams like they should be. Definitely wanna see what they can do vs a good team

Last week an Austin fan on twitter cheekily pointed out that NYCFC was the only team to beat Cincinnati 5-0, so obviously ...

But yeah, regardless of the opponent, better to win by a lot than any other option. Still, I've learned you need to wait 8-9 games before judging who had a good (or bad) start, and that's all it tells you -- someone had a good start and looks good early.
