MLS is just weird

Getting ready to settle in and put on the San Jose v Portland match.
This one could be very entertaining.
And if anyone cares it's also being aired on FS1.

The MLS website baffles me with their UX decision making. I understand exactly why this is done from a marketing perspective, but from a purely "league" perspective it makes no sense.

The header nav bar on the MLS website is ordered:
1. Schedule 2. All-Star 3. MLS Season Pass 4. News 5. Standings
This makes it such that if your screen too small to display all of these, the first one to go is standings. Which, idk if y'all agree, is one of the most important links on their website. I then have to click the three dots to bring up a side menu to find the standings.

Now let's look at some other leagues:
Bundesliga

EPL

Serie A is actually somehow worse than mls - though the table and fixtures are available on the front page after scrolling.

As I said above, I understand why All-Star and MLS Season Pass are listed first from a marketing perspective. But I think MLS is shooting themselves in the foot with the way they market the league itself and make it accessible.

One other thing that bugs me is - why do we need, ON THE MLS WEBSITE, every single club world cup and gold cup match? Only put the ones that relate to MLS please, thanks. Club World cup fixtures can be found on the CWC website. Gold cup fixtures non-US related can be found on the gold cup website. I'm on the MLS page to see MLS news, not anything else. USMNT being the exception, I think that makes sense.

wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. MLS should focus on MLS. CWC news (and other non-MLS league news) shouldn't be front and center when there is league play to talk about first. They are diminishing their brand and league on their own website. it's baffling. I get that they want to showcase how MLS is doing in CWC and it's messi. But like you said, people are gonna go to the CWC website to find that news out. MLS should be about league play and if they want to write articles about how MLS teams are doing in CWC, that's fine. but it shouldn't take over the main page.

They have no idea how to market MLS to non-MLS soccer fans. To be fair, it's possible nothing will work until they both simplify and expand roster spend and rules. But this nonsense they're doing arguably has a negative effect.

Further to Shwafta's point, prime space on top of the front page currently lists 9 games, in which just 2 out of 18 teams are MLS. The rest aren't even the USMNT. What are we doing?

I also agree the website is poor and it's even getting worse.
As best as I can tell, all game pages before 2024 are gone. You cannot access them from either the Schedule page or the Form Guide and I don't know how else to find them. Why destroy your history?
The Form Guide does not even link to game pages at all, even for 2024-25. This was always the quickest way to find them.

Finally, back to the marketing: it's been six years since they started Leagues Cup in various formats. Is there any evidence that Mexican-American fans are subscribing to MLS Season Pass, or buying more MLS tickets, or jerseys or anything? When MLS is not playing LigaMX, is this cohort paying any attention to MLS at all? Is there any increase? Propriety data something something fine. If MLS claimed it worked we would be unable to verify. But I don't think MLS has even made the claim that it works.

At some point you need to wean LMX fans in the US away from LigaMX, at least in some part, to get them to show more interest in MLS. I am in most cases a proponent of growing economic pies rather then fighting over how to split them up. But time can't grow, and someone who watches every Cruz Azul or Leon or CA game will only have so much extra time to start watching the local MLS team games, so I don't believe it can help MLS to market and showcase LMX teams in the USA.
