Man City is run by smart enough people to have gauged this reaction, and I doubt anyone at CFG is surprised by the reaction we've seen. The kit is stock Man City. It's going to look great to Man City fans who want to see a Man City jersey on a NY team, and it's going to look like a Man City kit to everyone else that's ever seen one, for better or worse. CFG was fully aware it would alienate fans of other EPL teams and fans looking for a more individualized identity, but choose roll this kit out to: 1. Build their brand, and create synergy. 2. Put out a kit that looks good to casual and new soccer fans. 3. Bring those new fans into rooting for CFG clubs. They're trying to,profit from the massive investment they've made in this team.
So long as they make more money doing this than losing money in season tickets and jersey sales from alienated supporters, I don't think they'll be swayed by the outrage. They're probably banking on fans being placated with a different 2nd kit, just like Melbourne.
Think Red Bull (anywhere) isn't aware of how much their fans hate the red bull identity? 3 logos on every kit (sponsor, crest, and shorts), every scarf an advertisement? Why not put a metro crest on the jersey? They'd sell more metro jerseys than they sell RB ones now, I bet. Why not? Because they feel it's good for their BRAND.
NYCFC, however, has it's own crest. We should be benefiting from great DP signings at season's start, more than likely have access to a great academy, and hopefully get a SSS within the next decade. I'm willing to deal with heavy branding while we benefit from CFG's patronage. They really could have done a better job with that kit though (yes, a stupid orange or navy accent), and it would have been enough to sway all but those who would refuse to wear City Blue (while backing a CFG team.)
