Agreed. Proving a path to big time clubs, other than MC, is a positive for us. Until we are a super club ourselves of course!

Great post and the appropriate way to look at it.

If we can get one Matarrita, let's go find a bunch more. These players are out there in Central and South America. Go find the next Joel Campbell now
 
MLS Transfers first reported it and I just confirmed it, FC Lorient made a bid for Matarrita.

Still trying to figure out what Portuguese club made an offer. As always working to verify the Matarrita to BVB move, can't confirm yet.
 
There would obviously be a transfer fee. For the purposes of rounding, say it's $10M. How much of that money is allocated to NYCFC by amount in the form (GAM, TAM, cash, etc.)? What are its restrictions? What happens if we don't get 100% of his contract? What happens if we do?

Because Matarrita only has one year of MLS service, we only get 1/3 of the transfer fee. The maximum GAM is $650k from a transfer out. So as long as we get $1.95 million for him, we max out on GAM, with the other $1.3 million going to the league.

If he sells for more than that, and should, then we will get more money than $650k in GAM which must be spent in accordance with the following:

The remaining balance of the club’s share (if any), and which cannot be traded, will be available to be used by clubs in the following ways:
  • Against the expenses incurred by the club in relation to the costs of an existing or new Designated Player
  • With league approval, clubs can use the revenue against an expense that would (i) would not otherwise have been incurred by the club; and (ii) reasonably represents an investment in the league or club (e.g. youth development and training facilities).

Need this expansion draft to get here already so we can start hauling ass with transfers without having to worry about protecting more players. We have a lot of ground to cover when it comes to the roster. Starting to get a bit scary.

A few things.

First, the sliding scale based on years of service only applies to Generation Adidas players taken in the Superdraft. So, we get the full 2/3 of the fee.

Second, what we get 2/3 of is not the total transfer price, but the price net of the amount shared with his former club (the split is 50-50).

Third, as NYCFCfan rightly points out above, the money we spent to acquire our 50% interest in Matarrita is not netted against the transfer fee when determining the 2/3 vs. 1/3 split, but it also does not reduce the amount we can take in GAM - which is up to $650,000 of what we receive.

So, taking your example. If the transfer fee is $1.95 million, we split that 50-50 with Alajuelense, which leaves $975,000. We then give the league 1/3 of that amount, or $325,000. We can use the rest ($650,000) as GAM, with the club eating the $325,000 it paid for him.

I think that's basically correct, but it certainly is confusing.
