MLS - February 22 - Miami (Away)

Inter Messi still hasn't beaten us.

Disappointing to get ripped up like a pretzel there at the end, but any of us would have taken a point at the beginning of the match.

Wolf has got to work on his attacking passes. He was a black hole out there. We should have had a third goal, but we couldn't make a lethal pass.
Attack needs more, Wolf, Ojeda, Fernandez, need to finish chances, need another 10, liked the subs, goal was typical of late game breakdown from last year, Jansen has work to do.

Despite a man advantage for almost 70 minutes we had 42% possession, were outshot 14-8, and Miami nearly more than doubled our xG.
Tana's first yellow was weak but he deserved a second.
Our nearly 40 year old attacking midfielder can't play a full game on opening night on a clear 70º evening. But hey, he gets to wear the 10 , which is nice if you're more concerned with 2021 nostalgia than 2025 results.
Our 2 goals came on a very clever set play that is not likely repeatable, and a brain fart gift from Alba.
While Ojeda might come good, so far I see nobody who can contribute even 8 goals this year besides Martinez and Maxi.

A lot of the 2nd half we did not play quick. We played SLOW as hell. there was no intensity, which is what jansen wants. We let miami take their rest instead of making them run. Haak was responsible for the first goal all on his own and did a better job when he was on CB and didn't have to track messi.

I understand sometimes you have to slow the game down, but we were up a man against a tired miami side with 4 guys who don't like to run. We needed to run them into the ground and kill the game off. Instead, we let them rest and take their chances against us, which they happily did.

The subs just increased the chances of miami equalizing cause we couldn't keep the ball to save our lives. no smart plays. sloppy and wasteful. it was inevitable.

fernandez shouldn't play unless we're up by 4 or more goals and there's only 20 mins left. wolf kills attacks and not sure what he's giving us on that wing. same as last season. Perea looks super rusty coming back from his surgery.

Mitja looked ready to play. Shore had a solid debut. Martinez looked dangerous as usual.

We had some positives for sure and on the whole, positive game with a bad after taste. We are in desperate need of some solid signings.
Disagree on the first goal. That was a complete defensive breakdown. And we bounced back very well. Could have lost our composure there.

Sorry, “Martinez dangerous as usual?”

Moo we generally see thing the same way but it not fair to take that for granted. He’s starting to look like a Taty-level heist and NOBODY but Lee deserves any credit for that.

I still think our roster is weaker than it should be, but despite the underperformance of our “big” signings, we just went toe to toe with the runaway league favorite on their home turf with Jonny f-ing Shore playing 45 minutes, overcame some shitty calls and came away with the same point that the combined forces of Messi, Alba, Busquets, Suarez and Mascherano did.

We may be a bit disappointed but the other team should be in shambles.

It's a great outcome. If they hadn't gone down to 10 in the first half we definitely would have lost.
“They” didn’t go down to 10 men. Alonso Martinez forced a straight red that should have been a penalty. Even without the pen we still converted. This team showed a boatload of character and hustle tonight and I am all about it. So much more life in this team than 12 months ago even without Santi.

The subs caused issues but I'm glad Pascal made them. Nick ran the team into the ground with his lack of subs. I agree that many players had good showings tonight.

We really missed Sands down the stretch. Parks, Shore, and Perea are all decent midfielders and all put the effort in on D tonight but none of them are ball-winners. We needed someone to put in a tackle and come out with the ball and none of our current mids do that.

I agree with every single thing you've said. But also, if they hadn't gone down to 10 in the first half, I think we almost certainly would have lost, so I feel fortunate.

And yet, we were unlucky not to get that 3rd goal. If we get it, it's a totally different story.

I realize we've been crediting lack of luck for a couple years now. I'm sick of calling us unlucky, too. But we should have had that 3rd goal at least a couple times.

This roster isn't nearly complete and we still almost defeated the runaway league favorites on Opening Night. This was a positive night with a bad result. We are in desperate need of reinforcements, and those reinforcements need to hit. Because we can't rely on Maxi Moralez to be our metronome the way we did tonight. We need a succession plan for him so we don't run him into the ground by June.
I recall Miami having chances to get a third goal as well. NYCFV was outshot 15-8 playing with one more. It could easily have been a different story but not in a good way. No way this team wins this match with Miami at full strength.

This is about where I am. I wouldn't say we were very good tonight, but at the same time, this was nothing like the disaster to start the season last year. So, that's a positive.

We're also not complete. Malachi isn't back from injury yet, Perea is still working his way up to full match fitness (sorry moogoo, I saw his performance tonight very differently from you, and I believe he should start once he's ready), and we didn't have Tayvon or Thiago Martins.

I'm sure we'll be better when we have our preferred XI available.

That being said, David Lee needs to burn some of that gigantic pile of dry powder he now has, the sooner the better. At the very least, we need a young, dynamic DP No. 10, as so many have pointed out. We're not challenging for the top four in the East, let alone top four in the league (Pascal's stated goal) without one.

I thought the referee did a good job* until that long check for the handball which led to a 3 minute check. There’s no need to listen to the VAR for that long when you can see on the first replay that it’s body to arm in a natural position when going down for a slide tackle. That gave the 11 minutes of added time and ultimately enough time for Miami to equalize.

*How was that a red card and not a penalty on Martinez. The foul is clearly inside the box. The only argument is that it started outside but it really started outside like 2 seconds before the takedown.

Giving Alba a yellow card to dissent when only the captain can approach the referee. Thank you for following the book.

It's really crazy to think about fine margins like this, or random events you might say, that decide games and potentially playoff seeding.

But it wasted 3 minutes also. It was a bad check, but it didn’t actually lead to more than 90 minutes of play.

I meant this in a good way. Dangerous in that he's threatening to get in behind and/or score.

we can agree to disagree on the first goal. if you watch the replay, you can Haak is slow to come out to defend the short corner. When he finally does come out, messi just strolls on past him while Haak just turns and slow jogs back before realizing "oh shit, that's messi" and then starts to run, but it's too late.

Not to mention the stupid foul that set up a free kick that lead to the corner. at least a few times, he just let messi stroll past him when he was supposed to track that runner. He got caught ball watching.

Miami wasn't at full strength because WE PUT THEM THERE. They couldn't handle Alonso Martinez, and that caused the red card. Miami didn't magically go down to 10 men, and their red card wasn't a fluke. We did that to them. We earned their red card.

He's not choosing to listen to the VAR. The VAR is telling him to hold up play. The VAR is in control of when he can restart. It was a crazy-long review for something that was not clear and obvious.

I actually don't think it should have been a PK for us. The foul starts before the box. They called the pull, not the tackle. Red card and free kick was the right call I think.
