I had to time-shift the game so I recorded YES2 as instructed.
All two hours and fifteen minutes of the recording look like this:

I think "maybe it's on the Fox Sports app as a replay". It isn't; Fox tells me to check ESPN+, and in the process I spoil the score for myself.

We lost today?

One perfectly reasonable reason we drew today is that we were missing 4 of our best payers and then 1 more went down ealry (not counting Chanot here). And that the ref made two back to back calls/no calls that altered the course of the match. If I’m a Toronto fan I’m VERY happy with the point, though pretty pissed that the NYCFC second string almost stole two points from our mostly first unit.

So I’ve watched the non-goal call many times now. Medina was walking with his back to the goal and Bono sprints over and literally punts the ball right into him, it’s not as if Medina was facing Bono and ran over to interfere

Supposedly the rule mongers are saying “well he jumped and if you jump it’s interference” - imagine you are just standing there and you see out of the corner of your eye Bono sprinting over and kicking the ball right at you. I’d flinch too and jump to get out of the way. This is a ridiculous application of the rule.

if things are so black or white, then a foul in the attacking phase would also nullify a goal...the Dwyer foul was much clearer than this play, and yet that was conveniently ignored.

I thought our makeshift midfield did well. Especially on offense we had no shortage of opportunities. Parks had a gorgeous flick to create the best chance of the game but Taty couldn't quite turn around on it. One of the best team midfield performances I've see us have in the Maxi era without Maxi.

And this is becoming routine but our team defense is astonishing. We allowed just 3.1 XG in 5 games. The next lowest among teams who have played 5 games is 4.43 (SKC).. Almost every time someone gets past our midfield the back line snuffs it out and we allow extremely few solid chances. The problem is teams are converting a high percentage of the not so great chances, which goes back to what I wrote earlier about Johnson. The allowed goals are mostly howlers bangers from distance, but the reason howlers bangers like that are notable is they're not supposed to go in that much. Johnson has the lowest number of shots faced per minute among keepers who started every game, which again speaks volumes about our team defense. He hasn't had much to do, and while he has not been terrible he has had only 1 good game and it came when we didn't need it.

ETA: to clarify, our 3.1 xGA is also best in the league even counting teams who have played fewer games. ALso edited to fix poor word choice.

I don’t think your comments on Sean are fair. I do think he should have done better on yesterday’s goal. But other than thought, I don’t agree with your comments this season.

I didn’t watch yesterday. Didn’t realize we weren’t on an actual tv station. So it didn’t tape. Just watched the official match highlights. Looks like we’re still missing a finisher. Good thing we gave a guy who has trouble Finishing a long term contract extension. All he does is run around like a chicken with its head cut off and miss chances.

I said he's been mediocre except for the Cincinnati game and it has cost us points and I stand by it. An above average performance would stop at least one of DC's 2 goals, Nani, or yesterday, especially as he has barely been challenged outside of those 4 shots and the Cincinnati game. Stopping any single one of them gets us more points. Meanwhile he could have failed to make any of the 2-3 great saves he made against Cincy, and we still win comfortably. He hasn't been bad, but he hasn't been good, except the only time it didn't matter. ETA maybe he does better when under more consistent pressure.

And to be clear, I'm referring only to shot stopping. His distribution etc has been typically on point and like any keeper he has responsibility to organize our back line and they have been stellar.

Benzema was much more aggressive Medina. Unlike Bono, Karius dd not go out of his way to approach Benzema. Benzema was inside the box and Medina was not. Neither was a goal kick, which entails greater restrictions on interference. Karius threw and Bono punted but I see no reason why that is relevant. Similarly Benzema used his foot while Medina used his head, to the extent you can even say he "used" anything. If the Benzema call is correct I don't see how Medina's should be disallowed. While it is possible the Benzema call is wrong, almost nobody took that position 3 years ago. Instead the entire discussion was focused on whether Karius was incompetent or had a foggy head from a concussion.

"The general principle is that an opponent cannot be allowed to be close enough to the goalkeeper to interfere with the release. How far back is that? It’s in your opinion. That opinion should take into account whether the opponent has merely established a location which does not block the direction of the release … and stays there. Sometimes, an opponent makes it easy for you by actually moving around to interfere while the goalkeeper is attempting to move in response to find a clear release direction. And it becomes ridiculously easy if the opponent runs into an area which is the direction of release while the release is taking place."

That last bit is exactly what Benzema did but Medina did not (well, except for the jump but Benzema did much more to get in Karius's face). AFAICT the relevant language in the laws, which clarifies nothing, is "A goalkeeper cannot be challenged by an opponent when in control of the ball with the hand(s)." Law 12.

I throw up my hands in confusion.

Ronny said the ref apologized after the game. There was no mention if that was for disallowing the goal or for not calling the foul on dwyer.

the BT sports ref obviously doesn't know the laws of the game. The law specifically states a foul occurs when an opposing player "prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from the hands or kicks or attempts to kick the ball when the goalkeeper is in the process of releasing it ".

This law can be parsed into 2 scenarios:

1) prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from the hands
2) kicks or attempts to kick the ball when the goalkeeper is in the process of releasing it.

Medina does not fall into scenario 1, because Medina had his back turned and was walking away. it was Bono who went toward him and covered a decent distance to do so.

Medina also does not fall into scenario 2 because Medina does not "kick or attempt to kick". He does a slight hop, not a large jump, which could be interpreted as trying to block. But both these are irrelevant because the rule states "kick or attempt to kick" and Medina does neither.

Under this law, Benzema's goal should have been called back because he falls under scenario 2 and Medina's goal should have stood. THANKS PRO.
