In the wake of Madrid's win over Bayern yesterday, the New York Times ran an article about Zidane's low-key management style. Their thesis is that rather than attempt to be a "philosophical" manager which tries to mold a team to a pre-imagined vision, what Zidane allegedly excels at is simply in-game management (unlike, say, a certain NYCFC manager).
While he made the odd initial choice of trying to squeeze both Modric and Kroos onto the pitch in a 4-1-4-1 yesterday, which wastes at least one of them, the Times praises Zidane's choice of halftime substitutions as a simple acknowledgement of his mistake and an astute observation of what would change the game in Madrid's favor. They present an interesting anecdote that in last year's CL final, all Zidane told his team at the half, when it was 1-1, was to push their line up by 15 meters.
