NYCFC Confirm Departure of PV. Nice Confirm Arrival of PV as Manager.

We were the top team when playing them and statistically should have been able to get results in every match, but got dismantled by two of the teams while only winning at home vs a suspect top-10 team that hasn’t really played anybody yet. It wasn’t just the results, but how we looked in-game with little drive/motivation in the blowout losses.

Yeah Portland and RBNY were inexcusably bad performances, but we were only ever the "top" team by results. We had a weak strength of schedule the first month and have been overperforming xG all season. Our current spot on the table is a better reflection of how good we've been—third in the East feels about right.

PV's staff is hands on so they may promote the most able of the group on an interim basis to ensure continuity (assuming he doesn't raid his staff), with DV becoming closer to player-coach.

For those more familiar with how staff typically move with coaches does PV going to Nice give us a better chance of keeping some of the current staff than if he went to the EPL? Does league familiarity and/or language play a part? Since a lot of our current staff came with him from MCFC and are english maybe we have a better chance of keeping them since they may not know the french league well or speak any french? Or does it not matter?

Our coaching staff is not English. Christian Lattanzio is Italian. Javier Perez is Spanish. Rob Vartughian is American. Kristian Wilson is English, but has worked in South America, Brazil, and Austria. English is very a common second language for Western Europe. If you know Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, French is not hard to figure out.

I mostly agree with the overall point, but the schedule in the first month was not weak. It's only "weak" in the sense that the second month was insanely tough by comparison. I calculated using Baer's methodology. Through and including RSL our opponent's PPG was 1.70. That would be tied for the second hardest schedule on Baer's chart, behind only LAFC and tied with DCU. From Atlanta through LAFC the opponent's PPG is 2.38 and both halves combine to Baer's 2.00. Given that, and even accounting for the xG over-performance, I cautiously expect NYC to do better from here on out and at least compete for SS.

Yeah you're right, it was only comparatively weak. SKC and Orlando have really pulled it together since we met them, though—they were both a mess in March.

I agree we're fully capable of competing for the Supporters' Shield, but it's a long season, lots can happen, etc. We've still got issues to fix and it'll be a real challenge if we lose our coach midway through.

i dont know...isint he the right hand man? he will go with him i think.

To finish out the year I'm saying.

I don't believe that PV picked the entire staff. I could also see Vertughian, the GK coach, finish the season.

How much of a paycut is PV taking to become the manager at Nice is what I want to know.

Their last manager was on ~$2.8 million

Or we just played five top ten teams in a row, four away?
Also, why is it an either/or situation???? Wouldn’t the fact that we were playing a set of top teams demand *more* focus and attention, while cutting out the peripheral noise (or managerial interest), from the entire squad and staff??? It was painfully obvious the staff/players seemed to forget that RB presses continuously in 5th gear.

Let me be clear, I have zero problem with any player or staff wanting to further their career either within the current club or changing organizations, but a manager is in a more precarious position to Fck up team chemistry and focus with speculation on his future coupled with the distinct possibility they’re distracted and not fully focused on the nuances of the current team/opposition.

Could be both, and I agree Vieira botched the Red Bulls game. I just tend to be skeptical of the "[team/player/coach] was distracted by [unrelated news story] and that's why they lost the game" narratives fans spin for ourselves, especially when there's a more obvious explanation.

So given all that’s going on I could see PV leaving, namely:

1. Arsenal - you really don’t want to be the caretaker after a legendary manager (see Moyes, David). So PV takes another European job, is successful, and is just waiting when the inevitable “next guy” doesn’t succeed. It also gives him more time to bring in younger players as a lot of the current Arsenal players will still be around next year.

2. Ligue 1 is a classic manager feeder league. Example: Current Nice manager going to BVB. Ligue 1 is a step up and will give him the proximity needed, he’ll be in Europe with a top league instead of “the” MLS which no big club would be caught dead getting their next manager from.

3. Pep just renewed with Man City - meaning more likely, more years before that job will become available. This could make PV less susceptible to CFG’s “we want you to succeed Pep” back channel talk and PV knows that to get to a big league, he needs to get out of “the”MLS.

Gulp. Who would think that at the next HRD neither PV nor Marsch could be there.

Would rather lose him now and hit a slump for a bit before finding form when it matters come playoff time.

true...and get a new person in before the WC break...that way they have more time to train test out whatever tweaks they want in those two weeks
