NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2018

Perfect new ownership: Messi/Ronaldo as part owner and face of franchise (same as Beckham) to draw players in, with a huge pocket behind them who likes to spend, but smart; Mark Cuban?

In seriousness, if the Etihad/Emirates merger happens (FWIW they both just denied it), it creates issues for all CFG teams. The Etihad sponsorships have clearly been a way for the Sheik to funnel his own family money into the teams in a way that probably helps under GAAP, and tax accounting, and in some instances league spending limits (though FPP has changed so much I can't keep up and maybe this doesn't work any more).
But also, as best as I can tell, a merger makes sense for Etihad as a company, but maybe not for pride and prestige of the ruling family that owns it, and offers little to Emirates as a company but maybe scores a victory for the ruling family that owns it (which just makes the Etihad family probably more stubborn). So it might never happen, but Etihad has money issues no matter what.

Rumor that Emirates will purchase or merge with Etihad.

For an investor sense, this transaction makes sense for Etihad.

But these aren't investors in Etihad, it's a royal ruling family that owns it and uses it and CFG for accounting purposes. I don't think Emirates could be used in the same way as people have mentioned.

There's definitely a tie to all CFG clubs in this transaction discussion. Emirates in London and Manchester? Does sponsorship now reach the highest bidder even if an "outside" sponsor is lower than what Etihad could provide?

Super interesting stuff into the future of the club.

I have not watched yet but is Wiebe still on our side? He was only one having us doing well in the start of season.

This is made for NYCFC fans, so it's pro-NYCFC but honest. He thinks we'll be knocked out of the playoffs in the Conference Semifinals....again.

“He’d be the first to admit there’s been some games we probably could have played better, but he’s addressing it,” Reyna said of Torrent. “We’ve been kind of dealt a strange schedule in terms of the amount of time off and then back playing three games, so that’s been something to manage that’s unique for him. But overall the players are very committed and he’s really happy with the group.”

....

The ideal situation for NYCFC would to have their own second team in the USL, but Reyna said that’s likely three years away — at the earliest.

“We are always talking about it, but I think we need to be patient with what direction we do, especially when we’re investing in money and there’s cost that goes into a commitment from NYCFC to a second team,” Reyna said.

“We’re exploring it. … The good thing is on the soccer side we and I have great relationships with a lot of USL coaches and I think looking at year by year, next year we’ll be able to provide opportunities for our players and the year after that likely as well.”

Surprised this nice article by Kyle Schnitzer in the NY Post hasn't been mentioned in the forums yet (I just got to it).

He profiles Alex Ring, and there is some good information.

For one thing, Ring says he is playing his best soccer here because he is being used as a #6. For another, he said he's been playing hurt most of the last two years, and blames the challenges of playing for his country in addition to his club.

How NYCFC helped Alex Ring evolve into MLS’ top midfielder

This is quite much stating the obvious, but retiring from internationals (to commit to club & MLS) around the same time that his new contract was announced hints at Ring getting even a bigger role at NYCFC in near future, especially if Villa decided to call it a day after this season.
