NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Teams in sports backload contracts all the time. You can backload contracts without a playing time stipulation.

De Jong's case is unique because he was being benched by AC Milan and was owed millions on his contract. He was able to leverage a huge buyout with Milan, so the biggest thing he wanted was playing time and to live in LA not money.

If I am a player who was a DP making millions, if I am still a quality player what economic incentive do I have to sign that non-DP deal for a hometown discount? Team would have to have zero expectations of that DP resigning.

I think there are pros and cons for signing DPs in the summer window. We would be more likely to get a player on a free transfer, but the downside is that you would likely have a player coming in playing from August to October/November without an offseason and since you don't know who that DP will be that you sign in the summer it would hurt to team build around that mystery player.

I think the advantage of the winter window is that you get the DP for the entire season and you can attempt to pluck unhappy players for a discount from their current club. You potential can get players who neogiate buyouts with their current club to come for non DP salaries like De Jong and Cole did for LA. Any DP transfer fee would also not have cap implications that a non-DP transfer fee would have.
Again, you aren't getting my point. I don't care when a DP contract starts - summer/winter. I'm talking about when it ends. Why is there never consideration given (or is it even possible under league rules) to have a DP contract expire in June instead of December?

One more time, in such a case, at end of contract, benefits would include:
  • If he is in the middle of a CCL tournament at end of season he gets to see it out by playing through to the following summer.
  • He finishes his DP contract during summer transfer when it is easiest for his team to sign a new DP to replace him.
  • He can retire if he wants.
  • He can see out the season on a lower, non-DP deal - allowing team to sign new DP while keeping this reverse DP4.
  • He can sign a new multi-year non-DP deal depending on where he is in his career.
  • If he played well here - ala Giovinco - he could head back to Europe with a reinvigorated career at the beginning of their season where he has the best chance of integrating into his new club.

I would never sign a player to a contract that ends midseason. If he's playing well for you when the contract expires, he would have massive bargaining power to re-sign for the rest of the season. It's a lose-lose for the team.

So let's say Frank continues to play well for us and is expected to retire. Our best bet to replace him with a quality DP is next summer. You're saying you'd rather he retire in December than have him through June when we can get a new DP?

If Frank is here next June, he'll be here next October as well.

Mullins has looked very good. That's a good fit for him. In basketball, we call them "program guys." You don't build a team around Mullins, but if you get him in the right set up with the right formation, he can play. It was never about if he can play. It was about when and where with this squad. He wasn't a like for like with Villa and he didn't fit as a RW either. Not his game.

There are two scenarios when a contract expires midseason:

1. The player is playing well and is an important part of the team.
2. The player isn't playing well and needs to be replaced.

In scenario 1, I'm happy we had the player during the spring. But now we are in quite the predicament. Re-sign the player? He knows we need him, his agent will demand a premium. Let him walk? Fans would riot, plus it is a huge risk to assume we will be able to acquire a like-for-like player, especially when it takes a while for a new player to integrate into the team.

In scenario 2, we didn't really get any benefit to keeping him around.

It's a lose-lose.

I'm confused. It seems like you are agreeing with me.

Joe Hart to Torino. Confirmed.

Sure he's not good playing the ball with his feet but he's better than Saunders and he would be the best goalkeeper in MLS by a mile. He could learn to do so under Vieira and maybe Man City would want him back in a few years.

It's unfortunate we (this league and for that matter us due to roster rules) don't have the ability to sign him if he wanted to come (and for that matter having MLS the level of the league that would merit him wanting to come).

Macheda - from Bluebirds to Bluebirds? (note, there is no indication of that in the article or otherwise, I'm just throwing it out there).

He was a kid with a ton of promise, but never blossomed at MU. He's a free agent now, he's young, he's a goal-scorer, and I'm sure has better-than-MLS talent notwithstanding his trajectory. I wonder if Maestro knows him as the kid was an Italian junior national team talent for a while.

Not a bad thought. He's right footed and could compete with McNamara on left wing and backup Villa.

With penalty of their Cap hit if they are dropped and not transferred.
Yes, I meant dropped as in removed from our roster. We can still transfer players out of MLS, not that I'm looking at any high earning midfielder who's out of favor and hasn't played since June in particular.

I wish we could give Mix to Man City to have him loaned to Hull City.

I really wish CFG would splash some cash on NYCFC in January. They're spending ludicrous amounts on players who they then loan out in Manchester and yet we have to rely on free transfers.

Despite CFG's touted financial prowess, NYCFC has yet to pay a 7 figure transfer fee. Yes we've managed to sign big names but surely living in NYC helped, Villa, Pirlo and Lampard were all free transfers. I'm aware we're still very early on into franchise history so this can change soon.

I'm really hoping they drop at least a million on our next big name acquisition. If Pirlo and/or Lampard retire I don't want to see us looking around to see who's available on a free. CFG have the money, spend some of it here please! End of my mini rant.

Agree with you, but if there is a guy available who absolutely makes sense to sign and they're available on a free, lets take it.

But we definitely shouldn't limit our targets to those available on a free.
