NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet. Seems Ronaldo just bought a penthouse in trump tower. Maybe we've got a shot at getting him instead of LA in a couple seasons.

In similar thinking, Rebecca Lowe (NBC's Premier League host) mentioned in an interview with on the Dan Patrick show that if MLS clubs would pickup the 18-22 year olds in England that are cut by their clubs/academies and brought over to the states, that would improve the MLS academies and teams down the line since they would bring up the overall level of play. Bonus, since these players are young, they can get green cards, maybe even citizenship and if they pan out they can be national team players.

These kids may not be good enough for Man United, but I bet they're good enough for Dallas.
Rebecca Lowe sounds like an excellent unbiased source. I think you'll find them coming over here more problematic. And there is a reason why they are dropped.

There are always gems in the rough. I don't care about her biases, she's a pleasure to listen to.

Lorik Cana was just released by Lazio he would be a huge upgrade on the defensive side. (Instead of Mena) Plays for Albanian national team where he is the captain of the team, i doubt he'd need a lot of money to come over here and play, NYC would be ideal for him, he'd fit in just well with the huge Albanian population.

Lots of Albanians in the bronx.
He's 33 and can play both CB and CDM. Get rid of Nemec's 300K plus whatever we're paying Grabavoy and give him some Etihad stock or something.

John Terry was subbed off for the first time in 177 matches. I guess that means he'll be coming to MLS within a week.

They'd get another 1k season ticket holders for just having an Albanian on the team. I'm sure he'd come for about the money were paying Nemec and Grabavoy even though i think with the current team we play now with the crosses coming in from Angelino and Iraola, Nemec could capitalize on them.

I don't know if I agree on the "reason they were dropped" comment.

Cody Cropper would be one of the best young goalkeeper prospects in MLS right now, and he was just cut by Southampton. There are guys like that every year.

I'm not saying you sign all of them, but going after a few here and there on frees would be a very reasonable and savvy way of helping to build strong youth in the roster.

There are guys every year who get cut by the youth programs. Two of them are playing very well right now in the US (Lletget and Pelosi).

That's not to say that Packwood and Cropper would succeed here. You just don't know until they play, but I take a flyer on them for 100k before I spend that money on an MLS veteran who provides nothing but depth (Grabavoy, Wingert, Ballouchy, Brovsky).

I get taking a run at Americans, but NYCFC would have to start waiving players to even look at these international kids. In England 1/2 of Africa gets counted as a domestic along with all of Europe.

We have Calle, Alvarez, Nemec who shouldn't be here next year. We could probably pay those "kids" less money and give them a shot to prove themselves. I've also brought up before that once we get our academy running, we can get international talent into our academy so they can brought up as homegrown. I'm sure the suits have thought of that and it's just a matter of getting the academy going before they can look at the logistics.

Nemec and Alvarez won't be here next year but Calle could still be serviceable.

This isn't a new concept. I wonder if the problem is just money. American college kids and academy grads might take minimum contracts but I'm not sure foreign kids living in England are interested in living here making 60k maybe. And the problem of foreign slots.

But you forgot about that great American exchange rate.

The key is to get kids with green cards and groom them here. You won't get kids from Europe, but you could get kids from Africa, Central American and Latin America.

I think the next step is an Academy School like Philly is trying. There might be a kid that probably isnt' a Man City kid but he's an EPL level Academy player. You recruit that next level away from the European leagues. Don't discount the draw of moving to America or living in New York.

I'm skeptical of every acquisition story.

Even if the transfer fee is 150K it's not worth it. The guy is hurt or thinks he's hurt all the time. Early in the season whenever he would take a hard tackle he would come up holding something and wave to the sidelines to come out of the game. I have never seen a player wave to come off so often. Maybe he just didn't like playing in the cold but he strikes me as the type of guy who is unwilling to play through any level of discomfort. He shows flashes of talent from time to time but I see no need to waste a roster+international spot on him next year.
