NYCFC Season Discussion 2025: Party Like It's 2023 (2024 If You're Lucky)

A win tomorrow against Charlotte would both guarantee we finish ahead of RB and clinch a playoff spot. Any 3 points (the Magic Number) won by us or dropped by them does the same.
Next target would be Chicago with a Magic Number of 8 so it cannot happen this weekend.

Hmmm… do I want Chicago to drop points so we are for sure ahead of them, or do I want them to gain points so they crush RBNY’s playoff streak?

I do enjoy that playoffstatus.com currently says RBNJ has their streak currently out of their control.

Playoff Watch
We're in.
Home Playoff Game Watch
Chicago Magic Number is 5.
Avoid Play-In Game Watch
Nashville and Columbus Magic Number is 7 (must finish ahead of either plus Chicago, or both).
Top Four Watch
Magic Numbers Charlotte 10, Orlando 11, Cincy 15, Philly 17, Miami 18. Have to finish ahead of any 2, plus every team mentioned above. NYC has 12 points left to win, so NYC controls its own destiny.
Realistic Hope/Difficulty Watch
Remaining games are
  • Miami at home (controls destiny for first place, stars, solid Away 1.57 PPG)
  • RB Away - stadium hex, 2.21 Home PPG, fifth game in 15 days for NYC
  • Union Away - best record in MLS by points and PPG, best home record in MLS, they hate us
  • Seattle at Home - should win but not a gimme
Magic Numbers if you assume NYC wins all 4 games, accounting for 6-points swings with Miami and Philly: Philly 2, Cincy 3, Miami 3. Adding the West: Vancouver 6, San Diego 2, LAFC 1. NYC can finish ahead of all other teams without help if they somehow win out. None of the Magic numbers account for tiebreakers. These are the numbers to finish at least 1 point above the other team.
Post Hoc Fallacy Watch
NYC has 2.15 PPG in 13 games since Parks last played. Still worth noting though.

Not that I am a superstitious person, but I don’t feel like going into the post season winning out is statistically the best option. Obviously yes grab as many points as you can. But we beat Charlotte at the record tying 9 game winning streak. But eventually wracking up so many wins, you are bound to lose. And I’d rather lose in the regular season than the postseason lol. Alls to say, we have 4 games left: Miami, @NewJersey, @Philly, Seattle. If we have to pick a game to lose or tie, which would it be?

Philly.
We have a chance to finish ahead of Miami and it's at home. Never want to lose to RB. Would prefer to win the last game.

Adding one more reason - would be glorious to lose to them at end of season and then beat them in the playoffs (preferably in conference finals).
Part of my thinking as well. They're arguably the best team in the league and have the clear best home record. Not sure we can beat them there twice. OFC if we do win, there's a shot at finishing ahead of them. But I think the odds of winning out are quite low.

I would happily lose the rest of the games in the season if we win a 2nd MLS CUP. the agony and despair that would cause Red bull fans would be the sweetest of nectars...

Then we’d have to shout “STARS” during the national anthem.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves at our matches. I love this tradition the year after you win. Every year beyond that (except when playing the starless NJ team) that shout just sounds ridiculous to me. Otherwise you have what, 15 or so teams who can shout that? What's the point?

Can someone please tell all the supporters that footylovin wants them to stop?

I totally agree, I think it’s silly haha

OG from May 2023

I only started noticing that the supporters are doing this this year. I cannot find any reference to it anywhere except one tweet noting that NYCFC supporters did it at RBA last summer.

I get doing it against the Red Bulls as a slap at them shouting "Red" in the anthem. That works as long as they keep emphasizing the Red and never win a Cup. I also get doing it generally in 2022 if in fact that was done and I just did not notice, because that was our year as reigning champs. But I have noticed it 2-3 times this year, including against Philly, and it's kind of lame I think. Should every MLS team that ever won a cup do it? Forever?

If there is there some other reason for it I'm missing please advise. But I'm guessing it started as an RBA thing, continued generally, and now it keeps going and is just awkward.
