Pure speculation, but likely in part due to salary demands. My guess is that Gooch is still asking for something close to DP level, but not over. Only teams who would for sure have him in their starting lineup would take him on that cost.

Gooch seems like the ultimate stop-gap guy. I could see him playing this season and doing okay, but then getting dropped from the team next year due to his cost.

Hopefully we have enough cap room/allocation money to bring in both Gooch and a DP yet later this summer.

I wouldn't mind signing Onyewu under a normal contract if we could afford the 250-300K that he's probably worth. If he's gonna cost us a DP spot, I'd only go for a half-year contract if we think we're missing out on all of our other targets...

Quick aside. Why is everyone assuming Lampard can't join until July 8 then? We aren't buying him, he's a free agent that signed a pre-contract with us, essentially. Doesn't that mean the transfer window wouldn't apply to him either?

Considering Wingert, a non-CB, is still a starter is insane. Sign Gooch immediately. A Hernandez -Gooch defense is slow but I think it presents a stronger defense than Hernandez-Wingert. Still need a new RB though.
