Patrick Vieira Appointed As NYCFC Coach

I'm a fan of both clubs and this is a good move for both of us.

It's unfortunate that some of our fans cannot see the benefits of this move, and the long term value of the connection between the two.

PV is very well regarded by his players and has done a good job in general since he was appointed to manage City's EDS. The difficulty in non-playoff teams getting there in MLS is even more reason for this to make sense. Why? Both City youth academy players that come on loan -- even for one season or so -- but also some they develop who aren't quite good enough to move up to far higher levels could wind up becoming valuable assets to NYCFC given the challenge of moving up in the standings.

This was the first year, a transitional year, for the club and how to make the relationship work. Next season I would expect a better use of that connection and perhaps some players who could be sent on longer term loans.

NYCFC should also benefit long term as well from Man City scouts who will surely be scouring the U.S. for players to bring into their youth team so they could wind up becoming long term NYCFC players.

My thing is, it's okay to acknowledge MLS status in the hierarchy of the sport. It does not have to permanently be this way, but it is the way it is now until we start producing better players, which apparently is still an ongoing problem.

Yes let's become what most people feared, a branch of Manchester City and make it as obvious as possible... I don't disagree with all the possible benefits. Just really upset how blatant it's become we are Manchester City USA

I'm not sure I understand why that is something to "fear?"

Remember when Barca was going to start a club in Miami? Were people there "fearing" this as well? I'm sure many wish it happened.

Man City have immense resources and are not dumb about the growth of the sport in the U.S. This is a long term partnership with I am sure hope that eventually the sport will grow to the point where MLS is a higher quality league than it currently is.

As long as that is the case, I don't quite see the downsides being significant other than some idea that we HAVE to be "independent" just to say that out loud for some reason.

I'd love a sound and valid explanation as to why this is such a serious problem for our fans and how it will be harmful to NYCFC as a franchise.

College sports are the absolute best.

No jaded, over-the-hill athletes hanging on. Just young kids playing with pure passion.

No contracts and crap. Ronaldo could play for MC because there's no loyalty, just money.

In college, there's all loyalty and (in theory) no money. No trading away your favorite players. No watching your favorite players get old and shitty.

Plus, the most inexplicable shit happens in college games of any sport. You do yourself a huge disservice not watching college sports.

But I digress...

As someone who played college soccer, I think college sports are the worst. I also think the NCAA is the biggest scam in the world.

It's just stubborn pride.

I just don't understand it either. Think about this, would you rather be associated with a group like CFG and a team like Man City or some other teams with less resources and ambition, or even worst an energy drink that only cares about marketing?

People also have to realize, no one was killing themselves to give Garber and his owners 100 million dollars to start a new team in NYC. MLS ideally wanted the Cosmos to be NY2. The Cosmos were very much full of themselves and made unreasonable demands and then MLS told them to piss off. I hope for MLS and for soccer in NY that eventually we see the Cosmos in MLS because I think that would be great, but no one else was serious about NY2 until CFG and the Yankees came along.

Ideally we all want a local rich businessman that is passionate about the team as much as the fans to buy their favorite team and run it with passion. Guess what, THAT NEVER HAPPENS. Most sports teams are owned by big time businesses and business men. Thus sports turning into a BIG TIME BUSINESS run by BIG TIME BUSINESS MEN over the last number of decades.

SO let's list the positives of CFG owning NYCFC and the positives to cheering for this team.

1 - First and foremost, the team is called NEW YORK CITY FOOTBALL CLUB. Enough said. That there alone is a big reason why I love this team. What other team represents NYC better? The Energy Drinks in Harrison? The Cosmos in their small college campus in Long Island playing in a glorified beer league?

2 - Resources that NYCFC can tap into such as the EDS teams in Manchester. Can bring in guys like Patrick Vieria to manage and coach our team. What other MLS team had a shot at a guy like Vieria if we didn't have links to Man City? Vieria is an up and coming coach in Europe. A few years ago for comparison, when the Energy Drinks hired Hans Backe, it was considered a coupe. The Houston Dynamo hired Owen Coyle, and it was thought of as a great move by Houston and MLS and a big step forward for the league, that a coach like Owen Coyle, at this stage of his career would consider Houston and MLS. A bonafide journeyman of a coach in England. Think about that.

3 - Money to throw at DPs!!!!!
4 - Genuine drive to win trophies!!!! DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS!!!

There are more positives to discuss but frankly I will stop here because I don't feel like writing.

Now look at the negatives.

1- WAAAAAAA, other fans call us Man City Lite. WAAAAAAAAA, that hurts my feelings. They think we are a farm, when in fact their best young players get shipped to Europe, while we take on the best young players from Europe from a one of the top teams in Europe to come and play for us.

Listen just enjoy the fact that every fan group hates our guts. They hate our inception into the league because they have brains that can't see very far ahead. They see only 3 feet in front of you and instead of responding YES they respond YEA. YEA will get you $8/hr working at McDonalds. YES will get you a great career. The hate everyone else has for our team and our fans should only make your love for our team and our fans grow stronger.

Actually, YEA will get you $8.75/hr at McDonalds. Minimum wage went up back in Dec 2014.

id like to have mathias bossaerts on loan as well as thierry ambrose.

Its gonna be a tough season for viera though. Coaches new to mls and its intricate rules don't usually do well…But I will try and put my positive hat on and say I think he is better equipped then kreis and will hopefully see poku is a better player than grabavoy.

And doesn't sell Poku to Philly or some Belgium team.

I do wonder how much of this is just an American thing. We're used to being the biggest and best when it comes to sports and sports leagues and this is one place we're not. I'm not really worried about the farm team or minor league accusations because honestly isn't MLS as a whole sort of a minor league in the grand scheme of things? It doesn't stop people in Belgium or Romania or so forth from supporting their local teams that their not and are never likely to be the best but it can be a big issue for people here. Wonder what would happen if the Yankees purchased a team in Japanese baseball? Would people be excited to have some branch of the Yankees (possible access to fringe and players from their minor league system) or would they be mocked/shunned as a farm team?

Also, can we please not have MCFC/CFG discussion in yet another thread? Refer to the Support Discussion CFG thread. Those of us who have been here for over a year have put up with it now after every announcement and I can assure you it's the same discussion played over again. Neither side will agree with he other and someone will probably get banned.

Japanese baseball is the worst possible barometer as it's all corporate owned anyway. The Yankees do have a partnership with the Yomiuri Giants.
