Pep Guardiola On His Way To Manchester City.

MLS might be attractive to Pep if only because it would give him an annual opportunity to be a dick to Caleb Porter.

as mentioned elsewhere ....pep to coach nycfc in three years and PV goes the other way....lol

Just such a strange way to handle things. Seems disruptive while their still in with a shout of multiple trophies this season.

They're well in the running for all four trophies still. In a way I'm not all that surprised though. They did the same thing when Pelligrini came in. City had won the FA Cup and the league under Mancini and then a year later he was out and Pelligrini was in. I hope Pellegrini goes ahead and wins all four trophies this year. Just because.

Not sure the situations are really comparable. They fired Mancini for not meeting their targets. You could say that wasn't fair, and Mancini piled it on last season saying Pellegrini should be winning a trophy every year and that he [P] inherited his [M's] team, etc. But there was also threat of Pellegrini being sacked last season if he jeopardized their Champions League qualification, but they finished in 2nd and he's still here.

There have been lots of rumors swirling about who Pellegrini's successor will/would be and when he would retire. The rumors have been put to rest and City can go on playing football. Pellegrini supported that:

Out of respect for Manuel Pellegrini and the players, the Club wishes to make its decision public to remove the unnecessary burden of speculation. Manuel, who is fully supportive of the decision to make this communication, is entirely focused on achieving his targets for the season ahead and retains the respect and commitment of all involved with the leadership of the Club.
I think Pellegrini signed with City knowing he was going to retire at some point. And it could have been sooner or later, depending on what choices presented themselves to City for next manager. Kind of like judges deciding when to retire depending on who the president is who will appoint a successor. But they were able to get Pep (which they couldn't do in 2012) and so the time is now

All your points are correct, and that's fine. It's just that I've been following Man City for maybe 15 years and there's now been 7 coaches (and that's not counting the one interim manager). I'm just not really a fan of the George Steinbrenner school of team management, ya know?

They stated in their press release that Mancini was fired for not meeting targets, but that wasn't the actual reason. They would've kept him with the results he achieved, but the real problem was that Mancini was a tempestuous personality who had a bad habit of falling out with people. When he won the league things had been going OK but a year later his relationship with the board had entirely dissolved and he was no longer on speaking terms with most of his players.

There are quite credible rumours that several key players - including Kompany and Silva IIRC - went to the board before he got sacked and said that if he wasn't dismissed then they would all submit transfer requests and refuse to return to the club. In fact there were strong rumours, though probably not true, that the players deliberately lost the FA Cup final in order to ensure he would be sacked. In that atmosphere it became totally impossible to keep him.
