Villa would be very smart to go the local route with food and try to follow ATL’s policy of affordable.
Listen our attendance went down this year, but NYCFC's average of 23,211 was actually 7th in MLS. So who knows what the deal is with this USL stadium (if it's 25,000, you figure it has to be shared with NYCFC because it makes no sense otherwise; MLS is never going to have a third team in the NYC area), but NYCFC is hardly a team that doesn't draw.
Why doesn’t it make sense. S sbrylski has it right. NYCFC doesn’t have an automatic first right to fandom in NYC. They need to earn it. NJRB can have all the NJ fans. NYCFC can have Bronx and some of Manhattan. And QFC can have Queens, LI and some of Manhattan too (maybe even Brooklyn). I think all 3 can draw 20k on the reg if marketed correctly and has a product worth watching.
I just think 20,000 for a USL team is excessive. NYCFC is the major league in America and we barely get 20,000 most days. You think 20,000 people are hankering to go see two minor league team full of players they've never heard of? I realize MLS is a minor league compared to Europe, but it's the best we've got in this country and depending on the opponent, there are some very good players on the field.
I surely think plenty of NYCFC fans would become fans of this new team, but you can be a fan of a USL team AND also have a hankering to go see MLS games. Same as Yankees fans who go see the Trenton Thunder and SI Yanks. Especially if we have some kind of an affiliation with them, which considering it's David Villa's team, it would be hard to believe we wouldn't.
I think with Villa’s pull QFC could get the Tevez types. Big names at the end of the career, looking to finish up in NY. Drogba went for it (though it was his team). But USL is changing and growing. And MLS started as a retirement league to boost its growth. I think if you did something like that with young local players mixed in and a shiny new SSS, I think the Queens fans show up. And like I said earlier, like Rickett’s Chicago team, have dreams of purchasing promotion down the like.
If a stadium is there from the beginning with no temporary stadium for 5 years I’m 100 percent bought in. NYCFC can be my B team but this is something I can really get behind even as someone with almost no connection to Queens.

Right now NYCFC is a team full of players I never heard of before I saw their names on this forum (with the one exception of Sean Johnson).
You love the team. Then you meet, get to know, and get to love the players that join the team.
ETA: And there is one team member I have heard of. El Capitan. That's enough to at least get the love started. Can't wait to get my QFC David Villa jersey.
Also, USL does not have a salary cap. So theoretically, they could field a better team than NYCFC.
And pro-rel could also appeal to fans used to following foreign teams around the world. https://the18.com/soccer-news/new-usl-structure-2019-promotion-relegation. Remember, Queens is the most ethnically diverse place on the planet, so you’ll find someone from every soccer loving nation there.
ETA. Give me a team that finished top of the table each season, can win the USOC, and plays in the CCL with the USOC title and I’m actually more excited than watching NYCFC finish 3-4 & get knocked out round 1 of the USOC every season because they don’t want to outspend teams like ATL and LAFC.

Well if they truly do I have a stadium which I highly doubt, this is the team promised to us not the current state of NYCFC.
I'm not quite in your tier of optimism, Adam - I agree that Queens could choose a USL team over an MLS team, but as stated earlier, I think the 20,000 attendance is pretty high. Shoot for 10-12k and call that a huge success, and build an expandable stadium to match so as not to overbuild and overspend.
Wouldn’t be surprised if most NYCFC STH hedged their bets and also buy QFC tix to get in on the ground level before deciding which way to go. A motivated and charismatic owner and former star with an intimate stadium is far more appealing than a corporate giant from a despot country who’s model is a highly conservative form of Moneyball compared to its immediate rivals.
If Villas team plays well, can convince Stars/semi-stars to do a stint, and genuinely grounds the team to Queens/NYC culture, there could be a big exodus of fans that aren’t satisfied with the CFG/MLS product.
I mean or, and hear me out on this crazy theory, people support both clubs lol. Don't see why the argument on here is even one team over another when they don't play in the same league and most likely never will. USL will never reach division 1 status as US Soccer will never allow it because they have too much invested into the product of MLS to dilute it. Pro/Rel will never be a thing because of the expansion fees paid for the clubs now and US Soccer wouldn't piss on their own investors. If this team gets off the ground and gets a SSS, yes, people will go to games. Hell, I think if they played at Citi Field, people will go. But doesn't mean you need to stop supporting NYCFC altogether. Take pride in both, be a fan of both and support both.
I know we've been down this road, but I'm not convinced of this. Pro/Rel will be a thing when a majority of MLS owners think it is in their financial interests. When will that be? Consider this.
MLS maxes out its expansion fees when it hits, let's say, 28 or 32 clubs or whatever they consider the max to be. Can't make money through more expansion fees anymore. Let's say 20 of those clubs consider themselves perennial competitors and aren't worried about relegation if it did exist. Further, they believe that pro/rel would elevate the sport and the league and their TV and principal value.
Then let's say USL agreed to pay a fee for the institution of pro/rel, perhaps something like the equivalent of the sum of the last 3 or 5 fees paid.
Under that scenario a majority of MLS owners see an expanding pie, immediate infusion of cash, bigger TV rights.
I could see that vote happening.
Ultimately it comes down to time & money. Hard to justify both to two teams on a STH level. Much more likely to follow one closely and the other simply via TV/internet.
If QFC is genuine with its product and doesn’t conduct all of its business behind a shade/has some transparency with fans, then it’d be doing business in a way that I’d be eager to support. Who cares if it’s Division 1 or 2, I personally like to support companies I can identify with. Whereas everything about NYCFC begs the question of “why” due to their lack of transparency and tight-gripped control of the narrative and their mystifying business model. If not for them being in NYC, I’m not sure I’d currently support them.
There are 2 things VERY wrong with this picture:
1. You're talking logically. This is US Soccer we are talking about. They think the grass is blue and the sky is purple. So for as much sense as your making, (Which for the record, I agree with and support a pro/rel system), they will never go for it.
2. It's REALLY hard to explain pro/rel to non-soccer people and to get them interested in it. I've been trying for years to get some of my closest friends into soccer and they finally did this year. They opted to pick a team that should of been middle of the pack and try to grow with them there, so they picked West Ham. I've explained to them how the relegation system works and they all immediately stopped watching because they think it's dumb and makes no sense. I've explained this to countless others with the same views and opinions. Pro/Rel would see a lot of fan bases die here than would create larger ones, IMO.
