wdym?
5-4-1
say we have
heber
mitri-maxi-parks-shradi
LW-sands-chanot-callens-tinnerholm

You push up the two midfielders to get 5-2-3:
mitri-heber-shradi
maxi-parks
LW-sands-chanot-callens-tinnerholm

and then that LW and tinnerholm can freely go from the defense to the midfield, meaning it's more like a 3-4-3.

You mean Ring has got his first suspension before the season has started..? :frowning:

I completely forgot about Ring LMAO. Where does he fit into our starting XI?
Where does _anyone_ fit into our starting XI? I'm glad we have this problem to begin with.

Sounds like a great event and deila sounds like a good guy. We were one of the best defenses last year but we have always been Shakey defending set pieces and have some defensive lapses that make no sense sometimes. If he can get us to overcome those weaknesses, it will definitely give us a stronger foundation to win the cup.

Agree that we tend to give the ball away cheaply way more than we should. It's something we need to work on and if we're going back to the viera style, I'm ok with that.

Bring us the cup Ronny!
We have always been shaky defending set pieces, but I would absolutely love for us to fix our set piece taking.

Last season, we were dead last in the league in xG/shot from set pieces at just 0.0589 on 116 shots. We scored 5 goals last season from set pieces, which was tied for 3rd worst in the league, only ahead of Houston and Cincinnati. We have some guys who can play nice balls into the box on this squad, we need to figure out how to take better advantage of that.

Good point. And why do we only have one guy capable of being an aerial threat?

Our set pieces have been traditionally disappointing. First, it was Pirlo, one of the best of all time, being atrocious and continually being given the respect to continue being atrocious. Then we had so much hope with Dome, the set piece specialist, who was destined to but failed to fix our woes.

As an aside, back in season 1 I believe it was Sporting KC who took advantage of the narrow width and scored by playing a throw-in like a corner. I had thought that it would be a unique way for us to use it as a home field advantage going forward by developing some sneaky plays.

I am not crazy, here it is:

And here is what Vermes said about it:

And it came by design. Sporting worked this past week on taking advantage of the narrow pitch at Yankee Stadium, Vermes said.

“We knew going in that because of the size of the field, set pieces were going to be a big part of the game, especially for us on the attacking side,” he said. “We worked on that the last few days, and I think it was executed really well.

I remember that play. He also had Besler, who was kind of a specialist at the long throw in. That said, I agree it's something we should be able to use more often. That said, I can only remember very few other teams trying it in Yankee Stadium since that game. Not sure if that's because it is easier to defend than one might think or if coaches just don't like it for other reasons.

That kind of play can only be done on a throw in from the far side (away from benches) and towards first base side of the field, due to the much larger room for a run up for a throw in...

Long throw ins are easier to read than corners. The ball floats rather than driven and moving. Sure there's always the element of chaos in the box but it's gotta be pretty well run to be effective. Not only that but you need someone with a big throw too. It'd be more effective to throw short and quickly cross in after faking a long throw

Great teams exploit every edge. Even if it's not something to use every game, it's something that should be in our playbook to use at an appropriate time. Vermes had his team practice it for a few days and utilized it immediately. You have to figure we could take advantage of that ourselves in our own home over a period of years.

I am hopeful that Mitri will continue to be a factor on direct kicks taken at the goal this year. Where I think we really need to improve, is with our indirect free kicks and providing service into the box that actually finds someone to get off a decent shot.

Rory DeLap begs to differ.

Fun fact about Rory Delap's long throws - there's a book called The Numbers Game which argues the reason it worked so well for Stoke was because Delap took up so much time with each throw. By minimizing the amount of time the ball actually spent in play, it minimized the odds of a largely terrible Stoke team giving up possession and chances to a superior team. Basically they tried to dominate possession by literally holding the ball off the field.

Hmm not sure what you meant by this...

That they are full of shit. They use the phrase “we would be more transparent but it hurts the club.”

It’s bullshit. You don’t want to hurt the club, do you? No? Then trust us when we say we can’t tell you anything.

Doesn't seem like van Bronckhorst is going to be coaching Guangzhou, indefinitely

In a statement, the China Football Association said their move to postpone the "2020 season national football competitions at all levels" was taken to help with the "prevention and control of the pneumonia epidemic of the new coronavirus infection, and to protect the health of the majority of fans, media, players, coaches, game officials, clubs and district staff".
