maybe im one of the few that really likes this forma and this cup, i do agree more $$ for advancing to semis and final can help boost its interest. This plus marketing it like crazy and not making the rounds being played in college/ high school fields when its the MLS teams playing. i remember the seattle- portland game was played at seattles 2 home stadium.
The TV rights for Open Cup are pretty much up for grabs.
This telecast was a one-off to gauge interest in the viewing audience.
The fact that it had better numbers than MLS matches bodes well for the future.

I think that it's a final is what helped I guess, usually the finals are in like fox soccer plus or some channel no one gets. TV deal is key, sure it's great to have YouTube live feeds for early rounds but for the round where MLS teams come in and on TV is a must. That will provide the $$$$
I'd agree with that but I wouldn't mind seeing the rounds where USL and NASL teams enter the tournament. If any amateur teams survive to that point, it could be interesting.

So what is everyone's opinion on this? MLS owned reserve teams cant compete in US OPEN cup anymore. ie: all the II or 2 teams cant compete no more as well as bethlaham steel and swope park rangers
Of course they would, because it would be far too much trouble to try to engineer the B-team to lose.
For a start there's the chance of the story leaking to the press - and the fear that it doing that might result in actual match-fixing prosecutions in the most ludicrous of circumstances. Then there's the fact that telling a B-team to deliberately throw the match in order to make the A-team look better is likely to backfire and make them even more determined to win, especially because unlike in genuine match-fixing cases, there won't be a financial motivation for deliberately losing.
Any player who might be thinking "won't this make it unlikely that I get called up to the senior team in future?" would have their negativity tempered by the thought that winning the game conversely would put them in the shop window in a serious way and likely would result in bids for their services from teams around the country.
Here is the bigger issue. MLS clubs were telling their B-teams to hold their better players out of action so they wouldn't be cup tied to the reserve squad and could play for the MLS team if needed. This threw off competitive balance, giving some teams easier games than they deserved.
