World Cup 2022

yea he was poor. inconsistent and stopped the game for non-head injuries.

still think we need to play stronger and not fall over so easily. maybe it's a personal thing but i hate watching whiny players sitting on the ground asking for fouls.
I watch a lot of women's soccer (the NWSL is a blast, btw). Totally different. They just pick themselves up and dust themselves off and go after whoever took them out and try and get her back. LOL

Just kidding. They're a lot more disciplined than that. But if you see a player down in women's soccer and writhing around on the ground, she's really hurt.

Anyway, for any stats nuts, FIFA is running a pretty cool post-match statistical analysis program this World Cup. Numbers come out about four hours after every match. Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klinsmann are part of the team running it. Here's the breakdown from USA v. Wales.

So Mexico & Poland screwed their chances of topping Argentina. Looks like we just have to worry about advancing out of the group . 2nd place still probably means R16 v Holland. But either bracket is a most likely a quaterfinal matchup vs Argentina or France.

2018
Lewandowski has never impressed me in international play.
2022
Qualifying? They're [Poland] great at Qualifying, but not so much when they hit the main tournament. Lewandowski Schmevandowski. Give me Poland [in our Group].

Guy can't even score on a gift. Team has three goals and four points in their last 4 World Cup matches. Prove me wrong Bobby. Two more games.

I’m surprised NY & LA didn’t make the top 5. Or even ATL or SEA.

England beating up on Iran I think is good for the USMNT. Iran is stout defensively and scoring on them in the final match for the USMNT was the main concern.

Now, if Iran is still not eliminated by the time we play them, they may have to open up and play in a different manner than they are used to.

Best result we can ask for is Iran to beat Wales (we’d control our own destiny at that point even if we lose to England). Next best; wales to draw Iran (wales draw or loss to England would mean we can still advance with loss to England and win v Iran). Both of those results will require Iran to play for something in the 3rd game and go for GD as well. Bonus is we’ll know that result before we play England on Friday.

Wow, now Japan is up on Germany in the 85th minute! I think this is a bigger impact than Argentina (since I think Argentina will still win their group thanks to Mexico/Poland Draw). But still giving this WC a real March Madness feel. Tho I do rate Japan pretty high, they play a really tight and cohesive team oriented game. Much better team than Saudis, so less of an upset.

Fine tuning your thoughts a 1-0 Iran win is best. It does as little as possible to improve Iran's GD and little to help either team's total goals, which I believe is a secondary tie-breaker.

The US friendly performances against Saudi and Japan looking much less suspect RN. Obviously all that matters at this point is what we do now in the tournament, but I'm old enough to remember when those games meant we could not even do well against poor teams.

Also, the Saudi upset was one of those freak results where Argentina didn't play that badly and the Gx was 0.14 v 2.30, but the ball did its own thing. The Germany v Japan was a lot more even

Also, Argentina would have blown the Saudis out if the new offside robot didn’t keep catching the minutia. I’m not going to argue about the robot offsides being good/bad for the game, but I will say you can’t roll it out for the first time at the most important tournament there is. If Argentine players had played with it before, I’m sure they learn how to adjust their runs to stay onside. They’ve had a career of learning how to push the envelope of what a reasonable person would call them for. Now they need to figure out how to make the robot happy on the fly.

I'm pretty sure only one of the calls was made by the tech and the rest were made by the lines people in real time. It is possible that the tech has led the officials to call things more tightly.

saudis played a very high line with tons of space in behind. after 1 or 2 offsides, argentine attackers and midfield should have figured out how to beat it. but they kept failing and that's on them. blaming a robot offsides or a linesman for calling offsides just an excuse for their inability to adapt to a game they could have totally bossed, but just didn't for whatever reason.
