2019 CCL

WOW didn't realize the top Mexican teams budgets were THAT high. It's like the MLS is French or even Dutch league up against upper tier EPL there should be no surprise we're not competitive .

its not all Liga MX teams. Monterrey, Tigres, and Club America have really huge budgets as they are owned by big companies. Those are more the exception. Everyone else does have money spend but not that level.

The two three teams facing relgation are the ones that really cant make end meet and cant pay salaries, eventually get sold and moved to other cities.

Yeah but the teams that are likely to be in CCL are the top teams so it's like their sending teams operating comparatively like PSG, Real, Citeh, Barca etc. and we're sending Ajax and Porto....

Fair. Just that the way the league has massive turnover it also hurts the teams participating. Add on to that how the league is structured there is no consistent top teams. Right now its LAFC and DC. last year it was ATL, before it was Toronto.

It's probably a good thing MLS pulled rank on CONCACAF and didn't let NYCFC get that CCL spot for total points.... Playing against the Mexican, and even Panamanian teams, with an ill-thought/poorly formed roster coupled with a derelict & fraud of a coach, and NYCFC would have gotten rolled by teams to the tune of numbers that make the Toronto match look tame. Forget about the Red Wedding being our benchmark for Futility, the Fiesta 15 was a possibility had we drawn Monterrey.

It was US Soccer, not MLS. And I'm not sure I would call it "pulling rank" moreso than correcting CONCACAF's interpretation of the qualifying rules US Soccer established.

MLS = SUM = USSoccer.

My point still stands that NYCFC would have been embarrassed every single match.

Didn't bother watching the return leg. Apparently Monterrey gave "One of MLS best teams" Sporting Kansas City "DA DICK"...again.
Shit was so embarrassing the good folks over at the MLS Reddit were quite salty and didn't bother with a post game thread:D

5 shots on goal -> 5 goals. 10:2 aggregate.

Yeah, MLS needs to rethink the roster/cap rules, or just withdraw from future competitions.

We almost knocked all the LigaMX teams out in the quarter finals last year. Maybe it's different now because it starts at the start of our season and MLS needs to change the off-season training rules for CCL clubs. Or maybe it was just a strange year where our best team ATL had a coaching change and didn't give their best effort. And a team that didn't deserve to go HOU snuck in through the USOC.

i disagree, i like US Open cup winner actually going because they did go in because they won something. its still crap shoot when it comes to see how teams will perform following year.

FC dallas won the shield and then got knocked out by a panamanian team in the first round. houston won their round and didnt get destroyed like SKC who is a better team than houston ,i think. ( i know its not monterrey but tigres is still in the level as monterrey).

Agreed, I think this is one of those things that just happens sometimes. ATL has struggled under the new coaching change, NJ has struggled with losing Tyler Adams, even though Houston is off to a hot start in MLS play, still don't think they're anything special. TFC didn't really have a full squad (though you'd still like to see them take care of Independiente). SKC are solid, but they've just been done in by a higher quality team. And done in pretty badly (and sometimes that just happens).

Sure, Liga MX is still showing as a higher quality league at the moment, but I don't think it's as much doom and gloom as the current results show it is.

Something to keep in mind as well. SKC destroyed a Mexican team, Toluca, in the Round of 16. It was 5-0 in aggregate. That same Toluca team just destroyed Monterrey 5-1 in the last Liga MX game.

true but in tolucas case, they fired their old coach shortly after SKC win. now its new coach

Fair enough.

I guess my general point is that soccer is very random, so it's not good to read too much into a handful of games.

Last year, it seemed MLS had pulled even or was at least on the cusp of doing so. The league handled its Liga MX opponents, save for one team that mostly prevailed against the run of play. This year, it was generally manhandled by the same league. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Or, MLS’s ceiling is below LigaMX’s floor so last year MLS played out of their minds and won a bunch of tilts and yet still came out short. This year, LigaMX is back to normal/firing on all cylinders and took MLS to the woodshed.

to me liga mx teams and coaches all were half assing when playing this tournament since they have not lost it in over a decade. so if they winning half assing why bother or invest alot in it.

last year it get very close even power houses like tigres and america being knocked out that some liga mx teams were saying ok time to get serious here and boom we saw what happened here this year.

salary cap does hurt alot there is no doubt in my view. and scheduling can be better i guess thats only relevant i think for first round ( even though toronto, montreal, RSL did make it to final and others going to semis too)

there is work to be done

They should figure out a way to have the cap at 10 mil. Set up a rule for number of Americans in the starting lineup and the 18. And fill out the squad with quality from wherever. You solve the argument that raising the cap pushes out American players.
Of course it won't happen because Kraft, Hunt, Precourt etc would rather sit idly while ATL and the new expansions get the franchise values up.

and yet they have the hardest tie, everyone else got easy ass teams. Herediano can only do something if De Boer fucks up.

EDIT: I think on paper monterrey is favorite. Tigres wont ever win a international tournament as long as tuca is there. we will see what happens, last year my chivas won, in the most unlikely fashion ever with how that team was playing at the time.

hey i was right ..lol looks like tigres aint ever winning any international tournament
