Yeah it's interesting. I've heard / read a couple of things about sportswashing which are compatible with your observations, for example:

1) it's not about creating advocates but quietening potential detractors. People are less likely to protest against something when associations with that brand are everywhere and either positive or neutral.

That probably doesn't mean that people take that brand / state's _side_ but it makes them less suspicious or hostile, or less likely to vocalize their hostility to that brand when they are somewhat familiar. Compare that to a brand / state that hasn't built up all of those associations and imagine what peoples' general xenophobic reaction might be.

2) Ownership and sponsorship of sporting institutions is just one more source of leverage which can be used to create yet more leverage or cultural and political influence. It makes them more credible and gets them in contact with more people in high places.
Yeah. Creating a situation in which such influential people have something to lose from increasing tensions with Qatar is clearly part of the strategy. Between British icon DB and the wealthy Mas brothers from battleground Florida (who also appear to have close ties with SoftBank, which is probably among the most influential businesses in the world and happens to be deeply tied to the Saudi's), you can clearly see what the real intent is here.

Hmm could you expand upon this?

I don’t think sponsor patches will be an option. If you want to buy an authentic with a team that has a sponsor you’re paying the $140 price versus a team without one where it’s $135
This makes me irrationally angry.

Any word on if, when, and where new customization will be available other than YS?

I never customize so this isn’t me looking for a freebie, but it would be on-point marketing & goodwill if the team had free customization at the match tomorrow night at RBA......

Admit it, you bought multiple winter stadium coats with PV heatpressed on one and then DT the next year.
I've never purchased the adidas winter coats. I did buy the vest from 2016. They sold produced another one with NYCFC on it. I'm disappointed.
