What are the +/- numbers? At first I thought betting odds, and e.g., ours meant that if you bet $100 on us you get your $100 back plus $35, but then I noticed the negative numbers next to Atlanta and Columbus and I'm pretty sure nobody would bet $100 on Atlanta just to get the right to fork over another $110 if you win, so now I'm clueless (more than I normally admit, at least). I still think it is betting because of the MGMBet promo, but numbers mean ???

I am not the most knowledgeable about betting, but my understanding is that a - means you have to bet $110 to win $100 (so a $210 return), but +135 means a $100 bet wins 135 (so a $235 return)

I was surprised to see that on the official MLS site but then I realized (because the mobile app is more explicit) it’s also part of the BetMGM thing

based on all the unknown variables, I should put $10 on all the underdogs in the first set of matches and see how it goes.

Screenshot 2020-07-07 21.32.29.png

1. Orlando should be the fav on their home field, with a better roster vs an expansion team.
2. MTL coached by Henry could easily beat NE.
3. DCU should not be that big an underdog vs TFC, if even.
4. I think MNU should be the favorite.
5. RSL can always lose to anyone.
6. No Vella for LAFC, though I still would have them as favorites, but you Never know...

Bet 110 on Atlanta to win $100 profit. Bet $100 on NY to win $280 Profit.
Negative (-) odds typically go to the favorite of the matchup meaning you have to bet more to win less.

Thanks to both you and ZYanksRule ZYanksRule for explaining.

I'm pretty sure I have had lines like this explained to me multiple times, and I never keep it straight in my head, because when I see the numbers I expect the same logic every other set of numbers in the world uses. In sports lines, the + numbers signify what you win (with an understood and unstated bet); the - sign signifies what you bet (with an understood and unstated win figure). But outside of betting lines, that's extremely bad form. If you have a line of numbers, they should all mean the same thing, and plus and minus should mean, well, positive and negative numbers. That's why I always get confused and wonder why would you want to win a negative number. I never gamble and don't care enough to internalize the poor semiotics. But it works for the people who care so I'm not going to tell them they're wrong.

They all end in draws. MGM takes all your money.

Somewhat related, NYT: Disney World Draws Excitement and Incredulity as Reopening Nears

County and state officials have approved Disney World’s reopening plan. Unions representing roughly 48,000 Disney World employees have signed agreements with Disney to return to work under rigid safety protocols. Many fans are ready to visit. When Disney began taking park reservations on June 24 — you can no longer walk up and buy a ticket, allowing the company to restrict capacity — the surge of interest crashed the booking system; some reservation blocks were gone within minutes.

. . . Disney, known for its militaristic style of theme park management, will require face coverings for all employees and visitors over the age of 2. Disney will also take temperatures, leave seats empty on rides and run loudspeaker announcements urging people to frequently wash their hands. Plexiglass partitions have been installed in shops and restaurants. Disney has added 4,000 hand-sanitizing stations.

Obviously there's not much of a home advantage when you're playing behind closed doors.

i think pitch familiarity goes a long way. I’ve heard players say they know when/where to shoot from based on markers they remember in the stadium.

This is correct. A $100 bet on a +135 would pay $235 (initial bet of $100 plus $135). A $100 bet on a -120 would pay $183.33 (initial bet of $100 plus $83.33).

These are money lines as opposed to spread lines. Most U.S. sports fans are more familiar with spread lines (e.g. Kansas City Chiefs (-7) at Denver Broncos). For money lines, the side you take just needs to win, regardless of final score.

One added note - for soccer (and sports that allow draws/ties), you will often see both teams with a + money line. This is due to the fact that you can wager on a draw that will also yield its own money line. For sports like baseball one team will always be a + money line and one will always be a - money line to even payouts between the two options. Well, even payouts after the book gets it cut.

But they’re playing on a Disney pitch; not Orlando’s home stadium. And everyone has been training at the same complex.

Didn't realize that. Why the hell wouldn't they use an MLS stadium with all the camera angles and facilities they could ask for? I get that they need the Disney hotels and infrastructure to house people, but you can bus the to Orlando's stadium just as east as the Disney pitch. Would look a lot better on TV. If it looks like a practice pitch they are playing on I'm going to be annoyed tonight.

Just to help manage expectations, annoyance levels.
the five-week competition will be played without spectators — or grandstands — on a series of fields more commonly used for youth tournaments.

I think that even though 2 games never happen at the same time, they don't want a single field to get worn down from 3 games per day. So then they could, I suppose, just use Exploria for the prime time games, but that means trying to maintain a bubble in 2 locations, maintaining broadcast TV equipment in 2 places, etc.
Apart from a web image search, I have no idea what the Disney/ESPN complex looks like, but I expect it will be not unlike IMG Academy, Fordham, or St. Johns. I don't really care. If there are no fans I'm not that concerned whether there is a big bank of empty stands or just some bleachers and open sky. And they claim they are going all out on the TV technology, with more than double the usual number of cameras, drones, "virtual stands" and all sorts of stuff that might be nonsense or super cool -- won't know until I see it.
Also for irrational reasons I hate the name Exploria Stadium so I'm happy not to have to hear it for the next few weeks.

i wonder if the buzzing from the drones will become the “most annoying soccer sound since the vuvuzela”. I totally expect this post to be quoted in a week with someone astounded I made the prediction.
