06/17 Away - Cosmos

The ending of the Seattle-Portland match was heated. After Seattle was playing with only 9 men, a Seattle player gets a straight red card after winning a challenge then an accidental elbow. Clint Dempsey then got a straight red card for arguing with the ref. Portland goes on to score against only 6 players (excluding the goalie) to make it 3-1. While these teams are heated rivals refs need to better manage the players and this game. You can't just get a straight red for arguing with the ref. Dempsey must have said some pretty nasty things.

Even though we don't have any playing history with the Cosmos, hopefully our match is better refereed.

Seattle fans were throwing shit at the Portland bench and the refs had to get a police escort of the pitch. This is the pacific (hipster) northwest, not eastern Europe.

I'll see you there. I don't why the bus is leaving so early though? 4 PM for a 7:30 PM game. It only takes 45-60 minutes to get there.
It was originally scheduled for 5pm but then someone got a case of traffic paranoia.

Looking at some of the results from yesterday my new big hope - no extra time. Let's get it done in 90 and keep fresh legs for TFC.

I think we will see a makeshift lineup for this one. With villa/mix available off bench if need be.
I'm thinking Mullins nemec up top
Alvarez/Sebastian/grabavoy/Jacobsen in the middle and brovsky/Kwame/Williams?/RJ/ as our backline.
Pretty much empty the bench

I think this is a smart move leaving earlier. I occasionally drive home from work in midtown nyc and it takes about 2 hours leaving at this time. I live only about 5 miles from Hofstra. With a bus it could be more than 2 hours especially given the Wednesday Broadway matinee traffic. For anyone that may leave the city at 5pm or later the train is by far the best way if you want to be in your seat by 715.

That's sort of the MLS strategy for the USOC, but I'm thinking that Kreis sees an opportunity for silverware here. No one in the US takes the Open Cup seriously. If we beat the Cosmos, we only need to win three four games, three of which we're not likely to see a first team lineup, to see Champions League play. And Champions League play means extra allocation money, which helps us to further build the roster.

So, knowing that we have an easier path for this than making the MLS playoffs... if I'm Kreis, I go full after USOC play. Unfortunately, though, the Cosmos are the worst team we could have met in this round. They're arguably more talented than we are, and don't have regular season play to distract them. They also really want to put one on us due to the proximity factor and the MLS tension.

Just a totally bizarre finish. Wow.
