2016 Mls College Superdraft

We took a keeper third round last year FYI, Andre Rawls (h/t BxLio91) but we didn't sign him, he was picked up by Wilmington. Not sure how he did there but he has been in recent training photos with NYCFC

Obviously you can't make a solid judgement on watching one game, but the 'keeper for Creighton (Connor Sparrow) made some acrobatic saves against Georgetown last Sunday. I did a quick google search and (FWIW) he's the 85th ranked college player in the country and the #1 rated GK in the Big East.

Since GK isn't necessarily a problem for us I wouldn't burn a high pick for him, but I guess he does fit the profile for the discussion at hand.

We traded away our second, third, and fourth round picks for the Kreis Komfort Blanket players. If we are not looking at our first rounder, the discussion is moot.

On the other hand I feel like something very important isn't restated enough. MLS is not like the NFL nor the NBA, the draft in general is not nearly as important. And the draft becomes less and less important every year because of the strides US soccer/MLS is making in creating European style youth academies.

A first rounder will be someone you might expect to start for your team after a year or two. Though draftees in the top 5 tend to break that rule of thumb. Players who are selected in the fourth round typically will never play for a MLS team. Fourth rounders are typically lucky to get past the first few days of training camp.

Center backs we need centerbacks.

I think the stats were we scored the sixth most goals of any team in MLS, josh Saunders had the most goals saved in MLS, but we still had the most goals against in MLS.
Saunders is a good GK yes, and we need good defenders but I think pacey wingers would be so useful

Are there any good goalies that we can get that can sit behind Saunders and learn from him/take his place when the time comes?
You can loan onana from us. But then he must be 1st choice otherwise ajax wouldn't want to.

interesting article. will take a look at this when draft time comes i guess, its really hard for me to sort of get a sense of who is good fit or not for our teams, and the whole combine thing is all iffy to me as a parameter to see players.

also since college games are pretty hard to find it makes it worse. Still just hope we get someone we can definitely use during the season.

I'm not expecting a superstar. A win for us would be a guy like Andrew Farrell, who was once the #2 pick in the draft. Above-average MLS defender.
