2017 Roster Discussion

Of course, all of this has to follow the current federal laws regarding how many hours a week sub-18 kids can "work." 23 hours I think.
I think this varies state by state. Prior to turning 18 I was working 40 hour weeks during my summer break.

I agree with everything you are saying. The problem is that the buying leagues are all in Europe and it is borderline impossible to get a work permit unless you go over there young.

It is actually pretty easy to get a WP in Europe with the exception of the UK if you are over 17 and can meet the other league requirements. For example, a lot thought Erik Palmer Brown might be loaned to Girona, but he can't go there at the moment because they already have 3 non-EU players. Germany, Benelux, and Scandinavia almost any young American would be able to get a WP.

That's a very good point.

Sorry, meant to say during the school year for the 23. But that was just something I glossed today.

So I was watching the DC game from earlier in the year because my recency bias was telling me that Mata and Sweat are around the same with Mata barely edging him out. I was wrong it's not even close. Mata's link up play from left back is unreal and would be a waste to use him starting at winger because of this. But I want Sweat starting in the playoffs because a backline needs chemistry and I think Mata is a great super sub.
I've also been rewatching the early games from this season, mostly cause I've been bored at work, and yeah, it's not really close between Sweat and Mata. Mata was so involved with the attack on the left hand side, and also just with our ability to keep possession. I think Sweat has gotten better, maybe just getting more confident, the longer he has started, but I still want Mata back

Also, rewatching these games makes me miss Chanot. Brillant has been great in his place, but Chanot was such a beast in these early games.

Supposedly Chanot wants to go back to Belgium at the end of the season. This would be extremely tragic.
His time out injured has shown that Brillant and Callens make a capable CB partnership, but he would be missed. He's a great fit for the system and just an all around beast at CB. Hopefully it's not true and he stays

I thought his wife worked for the UN, and that's why he came here originally?

Doesnt his wife work in a UN-affiliated position here, and if so is her tour (nearly) done? If she is being reassigned, then it'd make perfect sense he wants to be near her.

Or am I getting Chanot' wife mixed up with Brillant's or Ring's wives?

Edit: Seven beat me to it.

I'd be happy for him to stay but if we go into next year with Brillant and Callens there's really nothing wrong with that. We can pick up a CB who's more of a cover-reserve type and not have resources allocated to 3 starters at the position. The tragedy would be my impossible dream of Vieira playing a 3-5-2 being crushed.

I think you guys have already underestimated how important he is to our squad. Brilliant has been very good, but he lacks the athleticism, footwork and vision of Chanot
Chanot is definitely the Defense's Point Guard and captain. He was always directing coverage and spacing and the most vocal one in the back. Callens has been very good at distributing in his absence, but even with his ball skills, he's not as comfortable dribbling in tight spaces - but rather he's better at carrying the ball through to the next level with his pace.

I don't want to lose Chanot but where do we have a more acceptable replacement for a starter at any other position?

Okay, I am seriously never buying an NYCFC jersey again.

2015: Villa, Mix (GONE), Poku (Sold)
2016: Matarrita (?), Harrison (?)
2017: Chanot (Crying on the inside), McNamara (?)

That being said, from a salary perspective Callens earns $180K, Brillant $320K, and Chanot $383K. So we'd be losing our best CB but also our most expensive. However, with the TAM increases next year, this may be moot.

That being said, finding quality talent is always a problem and I can see us signing anywhere from 10/12 new players this offseason again. 2nd CF, Wingers, LB/RB, CB, Midfielders to replace Herrera possibly, 3rd DP.
