Similarly to leaving Berget unprotected because of his salary, same tactic with Medina.
It’d be amazing if Cincy took Medina off our hands..... positive sunk costs and that’s ok!!!

Matarrita and Sweat make more sense using that logic then Medina. Medina's budget charge is 15ok. Mata is about 400k. Sweat 200k+. There is no way that this team gives up on Medina.

I suppose it is still possible we made a deal with Cincy that won't get announced until tomorrow, if the deal was to leave a player unprotected who they will take in the draft. But it sounds like we were quiet.

Portland is also protected in the expansion draft. They received that promise via the Adi trade

If a lot of fans had their way last offseason, Maxi would have been off to LAFC.
Maxi was a tough MF’er and even when not getting points his first year he was all over the place and involved. Medina ghosts in/out every match and needs a massive strength and conditioning program.

I'm seeing this a lot about Medina, and I get it. Lots of us, including me, underestimated Maxi and he paid off in Year 2. But, that actually is not a routine occurrence. In some ways, Medina is a better bet to improve given his age, as he can mature both physically and mentally, while Maxi came in his prime age-wise. But until he shows me, call me Thomas and I'm from Missouri.
Also, I'm not sure what's more annoying -- repeatedly getting DPs who excel in their second year after solid but non-exciting debut seasons, or a DP who never fulfills his promise.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I do understand a lot of the criticism and impatience regarding Medina. It makes sense to me.

I just also want to point out that it is possible he could come back and have a high impact year next year. Would I rather have another DP than Medina? 90% yes (the 10% no is just noting other DP fails around the league). But I'm not quite ready to throw him to the curb just yet.

19 year kid vs veteran professional. This is a kid who is playing his first year away from home and had a coaching change midyear. Can't be too surprised he hit a wall.

I will be less surprised if he blossoms than I am that Maxi doubled his career averages in both G and A. But I'm still in show-me mode.

Not sure how we got on a Rossi vs. Medina kick but here are some per 96 stats to chew on. Defensive actions and recoveries are normalized for team rates.

Oh I posted this in the wrong thread. What's the difference between this one and the other one, anyway?

Good stuff. I think some of the worrying about Medina is misplaced. Let's see what Year 2 brings. He was 6 goals and 7 assists this year, which is good to begin with. It's not everything we want or should expect long term, but it's reasonable to think we will get more next year.

First thing he needs to do is get more time on the field, with just about 2k minutes in 2018. He only started 21 games, and played in 28. Avoid injury and -- more in his control -- earn the rest of the minutes.

I've mentioned this before but it'll help Medina if we build around the 4-1-4-1 next season. Dome didn't love him as an inverted right winger in the 4-2-3-1 because he naturally drifts into the channel instead of sticking to the touchline, but put Taty or Lewis outside him and you've got a very dynamic right side.

So something like this, subject to acquisitions?

Mata/Sweat Tajouri-Shradi
Callens Maxi
Chanot Ring Medina TBD
Tinnerholm Taty/Lewis

Didn't Isi play more on the right under Torrent, especially late in the season?

ETA: Stupid web collapsed my spacing.
