I'm gonna sleep on this, have nightmares, and somehow wake up feeling confident about 2019.
I woke up.
Yet to feel that.
The 2019 roster? A ground-up rebuild. Keep our most promising youth as depth, bring in *young* Almirón-level superstar attackers and dig up at least two Villa-level global stars who can actually produce (not Pirlo-style PR move seat-fillers).

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sands, Haak, maxi, ring in the midfield doesn't sound too bad!

We had matches during the injury crisis when we didn’t have any forwards - the kid can play wing and wasn’t given a shot.
Come on man. First, where did this he can play wing stuff come from? I don't follow the academies terribly close, so perhaps he has gotten some minutes there over the last couple of years, but that is news to me.

And when did you want him to play at winger? First, what games did you want him to make the 18 in? Leading into a match, when was it important to have him available on the bench? And then when did you want him to sub in? I don't intend to put words in your mouth, but this feels a lot more like hindsight in that we wish he had gotten minutes.

I'm excited for Scally and hope he continues to improve and earn minutes on this team. I wish he had been able to get some minutes in USL or somewhere. But I don't see one minute, outside the USOC match, where I think he should have played this year.

Attacking fullbacks have the skills to play wing. He did so in the USOpen cup match and looked good - subbed on for Villa and played wide.

I’ve been calling for Scally to make the 18 for a while. Distinctly remember saying so many times when our offensive options on the bench were limited to Wallace during the injury crisis.

So in which game should he have gotten minutes? Especially with Saad Abdul-Salaam available during that period where several forwards were unavailable?

This team lacks bite and aggressiveness in a play style sort of way. We are constantly bullied off the ball. Not only that, but our small guys aren't even fast. I'd like more speed and toughness on this team. I'd take a guy like Daniel Royer over most of our players. Not cause he scored twice yesterday, because he plays with that grit we lack.

Also, there is absolutely no reason to think attendance won't continue the downward trend next season. Does the team bring a big name in as a band aid or continue to try to build the right way, even though we suck at it.

I’m not going back to look at every lineup, and I shouldn’t have to - I’m not into revisionist history and call thing as I see them when it’s happening - I called for him to be included many times, just as I called for SAS to be included since he played wing in college. There were always better options to make the bench than TMac, Wallace, and Amagat.

Ok. I still haven't seen how it "defies logic" that Scally didn't receive minutes during league play.

Lemme put it another way - if a 15yo kid is good enough to play for his youth national side and earn a pro contract, he’s got the skill set to play - maybe not be a full time starter, but 10-15 minutes a match as a spark is and should be expected. There were many matches the team was lackluster and needed energy and a person that could defend, press, and get into the attack - that is everything Scally has in his wheelhouse. Instead, all he got this year was a few minutes in the open cup, while guys he’s teammates with on the YNT are playing much more regularly for their clubs. So yes, it defied logic.

This was a very talented team which underperformed late in the season after a sudden wholesale change in the coaching staff, tons of injuries, and weird scheduling.
The roster has weaknesses like every other team in the league, but we dont need a total implosion.
First and foremost, we need to solve the Villa dilemma. Whether you think that is getting him healthy and dominant one more time, or replacing him with someone who could do what he used to do, that can be debated, but we need to sign or replace him by the end of January.

Now to the great Mata/Sweat debate. Sweat was fantastic this season for his anticipated role, which was to be a backup for a world class Mata who could spot start anywhere along the backline while taking up basically no cap space. Unfortunately, Mata did not perform as expected for various reasons. Next season Mata needs to get it together and stay healthy eo he can lock down the spot he shouldn't have lost, or be moved on. Sweat will apparently be getting paid far too much to continue in the "value bench player" role, and is generally accepted to be replaceable by a better starting player at his new salary. So regardless what happens with Mata, if the salary increase report for Sweat is true, then he should be gone either way.

Callens and Tinnerholm are lock down starters. Chanot's future with this team is a major question. Is he staying or going? He is an elite back in this league, and he makes Callens and the mids stronger. If he is not staying, how we fill that role probably becomes the most pressing question. Many will say we got a youngster ready to go, but can we take that risk? Do we go with an expensive starter from the CFG scouting system? This decision may make or break our season.

Ok, so this assumption doesn't account for the other players on the team. Should Andrew Carleton be getting 10-15 minutes every match in Atlanta?

I've gone through every game and haven't seen where it was obviously clear he should have played. Maybe one could argue that he should have gotten minutes in a match or two, and that may be fair (though I disagree), but it does not "defy logic", that both of our coaches here chose two different RBs over him that have more experience and are more physically mature, or did not choose to play a 15 year old slightly out of position in favor of other, more experienced, more physically mature wingers.

If we wish Scally had gotten minutes in the season, let's just say that. It doesn't "defy logic", or it's not "malpractice" (yes, I know you haven't used that term in this particular discussion yet), that he didn't.

Sure they might be rare but games that are blowouts are good opportunities to give minutes to young players. We might as well give the kids minutes that we're going to waste on Errmagat type players who are cheap old and no good.

Chanot could be gone. We have he CB from Torque who's supposed to join us this winter iirc.

who?

Also, Chanot has been unbelievable this season. I don't think we change Chanot/Callens/Tinnerholm unless one of them gets a better offer, but the club won't change that.

Realistically what I see happening is:
1) Amagat not renewed (we already know he came just for the end of this season)
2) Tmac or Walalce not renewed
3) Villa Retire
4) Signing of new CF to replace Villa
5) Signing of another CM to fill Herrera void, or promotion of Sands/Scally/Haak/other academy player to CM roll next to Ring and Maxi.

I can't see, realistically, much else happening this off-season.

Joe Scally is the only 15-year-old who's even on an MLS roster. Three 16-year-olds saw the field in the league this season; they played 177, 153, and 1 minutes. Two 17-year-olds got MLS time; they played 307 and 3 minutes.
Whether 15 or 16 is the same as far as current YNT - Bello is the same age, less physical stature, and he started 2 (with a 3rd as a sub) matches for a team that was more talented than NYCFC.

3of the4 players you pulled minutes for played 630minutes collectively, that’s 7 full matches which for kids is a lot of game minutes, and if Scally had gotten 10-15min in games, he could have logged 100-150min over 10matches, which would have garnered valuable experience in game situations. I wasn’t calling for Scally to start every match, but 10-15min subs are very productive and there was a period at the end of the season when SAS was loaned out and Tinny looked flat and stale. Even one start would have given Tinny a recharge break.

CP has said the most important years of development are the teens and the jump he made was because he was playing regularly for Dortmund. What’s the point of signing a kid to a pro contract if they aren’t going to play and develop?

Maybe we can rescue Cyle Larin from his Turkish prison.
