2023 Leagues Cup

Ok so I've actually really been enjoying leagues cup in general.
You get a red! You get a red!
In two games the Union have drawn 2 reds - both DOGSO- and taken 3 PKs.
Cincy got another DOGSO just now which I’m guessing inspired your post.
I’m confused though because the field ref reviewed the play just now and I thought all VAR was handled by the video official in Leagues Cup.

Yeah no idea about that. It's weirdly inconsistent.

Nashville vs Toluca is really fun. I switched from the cinci game bc it's basically over

Toluca ref also didn't go to monitor. Maybe the no monitor is for certain calls, and for red cards it's go to monitor?

I've been trying to determine how tiebreakers work in the Group Stage if all three teams are tied. The regulations aren't entirely clear about what happens if there is a 3-way tie.

Obviously, the same tiebreakers apply as in a 2-way tie, but once you hit a tiebreaker that differentiates between the 3 teams, there are different ways to apply it.
  1. Drop the lowest team and then re-run the tiebreakers for the other two.
  2. Elevate the highest team and then re-run for the other two.
  3. Use that single tiebreaker to rank all 3 teams.
Each of the three methods leads to a different outcome.

Let's assume Toronto beats Atlas 2-0. Under method 1, Toronto is dropped on goal differential, and re-running the tiebreakers has Atlas winning the group because they beat us head-to-head. Under method 2, we win the group because we have the highest goal differential, and Atlas is eliminated because they lost head-to-head against Toronto. Under method 3, we win the group, Atlas is 2nd and Toronto last.

Given the wording in the regulations, I think they will use method 3. This means in Mark G's Ouroboros infinity loop scenario, head-to-head will be tied and the first tiebreaker is really goal differential.

So, for NYCFC to win its group, Toronto has to beat Atlas by 8 goals or fewer.

Did you make this, or did you just find it? LOL. This is what I was going for, didn't know a gif existed!
I made it a while back. Fun to pull out on the rare occasions it's applicable.

It's on Giphy, but that thing is such a shitshow that you'll never find it. Feel free to download.

Unless I’m reading it wrong it seems like we are playing away at RBA against NJ.

Did they explain what would happen if a LMX team plays another LMX team?

At least Leagues Cup breaks up the same old same old drudgery of the MLS schedule. I mean, how else would NYCFC get to play Atlas, Toronto, and now the Red Bulls? And if we win, we get to play - DC or Philadelphia!
It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

But honestly I’m kind of enjoying getting more familiar with the Liga MX teams and seeing them face off against the MLS sides, and seeing the fans. The leagues seem pretty comparable in quality, although the Mexican clubs are at a disadvantage being on an extended road trip.

And it's the Liga MX offseason similar to when MLS teams play in CCL.

Looking ahead at the bracket (after the round of 32 home game is based on the original seeding -- we are home against everyone left on our side of the bracket except Philly). When we beat the Red Bulls and (presumably) Philly, we are guaranteed home/RBA games for the quarterfinals (rematch against Atlas or Pumas?) and semifinals (could be Messi & Miami). In my book we are 2 wins away from a legitimate chance at a trophy/Champions Cup slot.

With the talent we have and Maxi in the mix, we can hope for this chance at redeeming the season.

you're assuming the new kids will get minutes. other than maxi and our desperate need for a #9 (bak-man!) ... none of the other signings will be making any real appearance or have any influence on our performances. i am excited to see what bak-man can do with maxi pulling strings and feeding him...
