I agree.

The one caveat is the duration of the agreement. I am not sure if there are any rules around the other MLS team offering a longer contract than NYCFC. For players the age of Johnson and Callens, that could be important.
The length of the contract is a huge factor for both players. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to learn they're both looking for five years.

These conversations are the reason I am happy this isn't my job.

Also, I love how we're sitting here debating these things that we know absolutely nothing about what's happening behind the scenes... and this is why i love the forum lmfao

So if what has been written on Twitter is correct, Callens wasn’t happy with NYCFC’s offer. Most likely he wanted to be paid same as Martins and NYCFC balked at making him a DP offer.

It also says that he is evaluating other offers in the league and Liga MX. Other league offers can’t really be economically attractive either if Callens wants DP $$ unless they are offering a ridiculous term. More likely it is leaving for Liga MX who could pay the $$ that Callens wants.

I mean if he ends up accepting a deal for $1M at FC Cincinnati then the NYCFC FO should be roasted.

There's definitely a little tea leaf reading involved.

But it's good to at least know the parameters of the finances. Keeping our two remaining 2022 MLS All-Stars is doable (Taty was the third, and we technically still have him, although we don't). So, if it doesn't work out it's for other reasons than being too financially constrained.

EDIT: I should say, one of those reasons could be unreasonable or unrealistic demands by the players. Business is still business. It doesn't seem like there is anything exorbitant on the table, but we really don't know what's happening behind closed doors.

I personally don't think Callens looking for something in Martins territory and Sean looking for something like MLS goalkeeper top dollar is at all unreasonable. Looking for it over, say, five years with an option may be unrealistic. And looking for more than that might be just asking too much.

why not? he's proving he can play in a top league. if he played with a better squad, he'd produce more. his lack of goals, at least from the games I've seen, is mostly due to those around him just not being very good.

his age, and he is not exactly killing it. he has respectable numbers, although not really his fault, the team is just trying to not get relegated. i think the teams that would be after him will only be able to give the 10M USD that they initially wanted to give. big teams can pay it but i dont think they are all too interested in him, at least not yet. the second half of season can change perception of him.

he's only 24, but yea. going to girona got him playing time but surrounded him with players that did not suit is talents. according to transfermarket, his value has dropped down to 9 mill.

hopefully this latter half of the season, things can pick up and he can hit double digit goals, like 15 goals, which is respectable, i think.

Major, major grimace if true.

I am absolutely not sold on Luis Barraza as a starter.
He's talented, and he'd probably improve dramatically with playing time. A lot of the shakiness was likely a combination of nerves and rust.

But I worry about his size. He's listed at 6'2" but I think that's pretty generous. Maybe really generous. Callens is listed at 6'1" and I don't recall thinking Barraza was taller than him when they were standing next to each other.

If we lose Johnson do we really think we won’t sign a keeper ? New England went out and found petrovic when they lost Turner . I don’t think there’s a for like replacement that is American or in mls we could realistically sign , but with CFG scouting surely we can go out and find a promising young foreign keeper in that mold .

Yeah, I would hope that's true. I do think we're going to have a bunch of signings coming our way, both this window and in the secondary.

As long as it’s not a repeat of Eirik Johansen. That first Toronto home playoff game was painful.

I agree.

I'm going on nothing but gut feeling, but I just get the vibes CFG doesn't care. When I say doesn't care I'm talking along the lines of CFG viewing guys like Johnson and Callens as MLS level players and nothing more. They have their idea of what each player is worth and they're not going to overpay. If either guy can get a better offer then it's "go for it bro, good luck, thank you for your service and next man up."

As I said, nothing to back it up but gut feeling, but I don't think I'm that far out of the ballpark.

this is nothing new. Ring wanted a raise and i think matarrita as well. Both were traded. I dont see it as a gut feeling. its been the process when similar situations comes up.

EDIT: the issue this time around is that the turnover is massive, not two big players. its literally half the starting eleven.

Point taken, but imho CFG still won't bat an eye.

It'll be more teenagers and 20 year old's sent to the AAA affiliate in the Bronx and it'll be Cush's headache to make it work.
