Just remember that windows being open only matters for the team bringing in a player.

So in essence, NYCFC, because the MLS window is still open, could sign players from leagues whose windows are currently closed.
Makes sense, but as a team in a closed window I’d be more hesitant to sell a player knowing that I can’t replace them. You have to be pretty certain you are not going to use that player going forward or willing to take on risk.

This is admittedly a bit half-baked but is there any chance the team intentionally delays signing a chunk of our roster each year as a way to try to gain a salary cap advantage? As others have pointed out the 1st 15 games of the season are mostly meaningless with how many teams make the playoffs. If every season you hold off on 2-3 signings for about 25-35% of the season that's a fairly sizeable cap/GAM/TAM savings depending on which contracts you do it with. Say this year we hold off on a DP ($400K cap hit) and two $700K TAM/Gam-type players for 30% of the season that's a $540K savings.

In a capped league trying to drive parity is it possible that this is some sort of money ball approach by our front office or am I overthinking it and we are just slow with our signings?

...you know what's funny? I was just watching a Zealand video (football manager youtuber) and he was going into how Toulouse are rocking Ligue 1 using a moneyball approach - made me wonder how much we're using moneyball approach as well

I like some of your assessment on Pellegrini improving half to half, but this is just wrong. Plenty of shite players show "attitude" by letting their testosterone run on the field. When you "hire for attitude" the attitude you want is to never give up - in game or in practice. Be the first one in and last one out. Be positive with teammates. Never stop running. Lift people up. That's what you are looking for when you hire for attitude.
I think you misunderstood me, at least in your first two lines. Which is kind of funny, because you got it right in the rest of your comment.

Pellegrini has shown me nothing other than being upbeat, positive, good-natured, and relentless in his effort. He's shown none of the rough edges, say, Santi has shown by arguing with Maxi on the pitch, arguing with Nick on the touch line, arguing with the ref constantly.

I just really like his mental makeup. And I definitely think the talent is there; he just needs the opportunity to show it.

Anyway, the example I gave was some subtle badassery. It's the kind of thing you cannot teach. Dudes either have that kind of strength under the hood or they don't. When they do and have the rest of the package to go with it, they're a winning player.

i sure hope you're right about him. i agree we haven't seen enough yet and game 1 wasn't exactly a stellar performance from anybody save for maybe barazza.

i'd like to see him grow and improve. that's all we can ask for really. but if santi returns, i don't think we see him play much, tbh.

We'll see. I'm not so sure Santi is coming back anytime soon, to be honest. I'm not even sure he particularly wants to. Either way, I think we have enough to avoid any panic buys and take the next five, six games to further sort things out.

So far, we've already gotten two firm conclusions out of just one game:

  1. Tayvon Gray is a center back and not an attacking right back, and will always be a center back and not an attacking right back
  2. Our front line is a lot more dangerous with Talles Magno on the wing and Thiago Andrade at center-forward

That's a start. We were pretty terrible in the first half for sure. But flipping Talles Magno and Thiago and taking Tayvon out of the attack improved things dramatically. If we start Ilenič at right back (and I think we should) that should allow Pellegrini and Pereira to connect a lot more. Then we'll get a much better idea of what we have.

Lots of stuff in here about Santi returning, throw it through translate if you need. 5 year contract, Lee apparently was in Montevideo twice to negotiate.

wow i missed this. Normally i try to seek out info in the spanish sites. this is from friday. He does say he is awaiting travel documentation, i assume its visa. Probably why a delay on the nycfc side to announce.

Now this is a game I would have liked to see:

"On his return to Uruguayan soccer Rodríguez played a single match at MCT and scored a goal. It was on February 5, 2023, before Danube at the Centennial Stadium, where he scored at 75 minutes through a prison. In discounts he was expelled."
