2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

This quote from James Sands makes me think he wants to leave this winter and try Europe again:

On next steps for next season...

“I was really happy with my performance for a lot of the season. I think I developed a lot of areas that I was hoping to. I don't want to speak on next season right now, so much happens and players come and go, staff comes and go. All I can say is I'm really happy being part of this team. I've loved playing under Nick [Cushing] and that whole coaching staff. A really good experience this year.”
As of right now, the only players out of contract for 2024 are Maxi Moralez and Luis Barraza. We have a team option for 2025 on Thiago Andrade.

All other players are under contract for 2025, unless guys are sold.

I think the following players have the biggest chance to be sold:
James Sands ("I've loved playing under Nick.")
Justin Haak (Said postgame he wants to be a starter, either here or elsewhere)
Julian Fernandez (Reports of interest from Brazil)
Jovan Mijatovic (does he want to be here?)
Hannes Wolf (does he want to go back to Europe?)

Barring selling, does not appear like there will be massive changes to the roster for 2025.

That quote you shared from tonight connects with this from The Outfield.

Our U22 scouting has killed this team the last few seasons. Acevedo. Andrade. Magno. Ojeda. Fernandez. Jovan. I’m missing some I know. We’re using the spots and spending the money and we’re buying poorly. Probably the worst return of any MLS team.

In 11 years, we’re yet to develop and bring through the Academy a single attacking player who is a guaranteed starter. The closest was Jasson and his best attribute was his foul rate.

That’s on David Lee. That’s on CFG. Thank you for spending the money to the limits of the U22 rules. But holy sht. Who is scouting for us?!!!

I didn’t think Sands or Parks was particularly good this season. I’d prefer we keep Haak. And Perea should be on the team sheet when healthy

I think Hannes Wolf will be 100% back. People are taking one line out of context from that interview. After the game, he said he hit a wall second half of the season and that he was exhausted. Went 17-18 months with out of break because of how the European and MLS season line up. Very similar to what we saw with Sands when he came back from Rangers.

I would be fine with a Sands-Perea-Maxi + young 10 midfield situation next year. Parks has his moments, but when he is off it kills our movement into the final third.

I’m ready to move on from Parks. Not consistent enough, and not a high enough ceiling, for such a key position on the team. Happy to stick with Sands but sounds like if he gets an offer he’s gone.

There are a few success stories, like Gabi Pereira and Taty, but yes -- there have been far too many misses. That's such an important part of the roster, you can almost use those guys as extra DPs. We need to figure out how to maximize that roster potential.

Hard disagree on Sands. Dude was everywhere. Shut down Messi. Shut down Benteke twice. What more do you want from him?

I agree, Sands was excellent defensively this season. If he departs we will see a significant dropoff on defense and all the holes Sands has been subtly plugging will be very apparent.

It does seem like his passing abilities have regressed as compared to he pre-Rangers days but I'm not certain if that's a Sands issue or a system thing.

I honestly think we should have 6 starting roles up for grabs this offseason.

Starters back and in - Freese, Martins, Haak, Sands, Santi

Every other role should be a target for competition. (Yes. Yes. Yes. Every player should have to earn their minutes. But I’d be perfectly content with Cush/Lee saying those 5 spots don’t need bolstering.)

These OTOH …
Players back (or not) and competing - Hannes/Fernandez, OT/TBD, Mitja/Teyvon/TBD, Perea/Parks/TBD, Martinez/TBD, Malachi/TBD

Starter no more - Maxi - I’d really like to see him take on a super-sub role to extend his value and because the team had quality in his place

Everyone else I could take or leave. WE HAVE A DP SPOT FROM MAGNO. Let’s use that shit.

I totally forgot about that DP spot. Great call from you.

Personally, I don't think Santi is a starting No. 10. As a winger, absolutely. But we need to sign a DP No. 10. Bring Maxi back, too, on a similar contract to what he had this year.

We need a guy who can be what Maxi was when he first got here. A 15-assist/year player. Not a 19-year-old prospect, a legit MLS star.

NYCFC has gone towards signing lots of young developmental projects, which they should do, but if you want to compete for trophies you need stars. We don't have any stars. We need a talisman.

can't use talles DP spot, he's returning mid-season 2025 unless he's sold. his contract with us is until 2027. so it just wouldn't be possible to use the DP spot cause we'd be in a predicament mid-2025.

We can use it - his loan can be extended by Corinthians to December, 2025. If he were to come back in June, we wouldn't be able to register him until we create room on the roster.

The short answer is that if we sign a DP this winter and Talles comes back in June, we would have to find a new loan for him or sell him.

Loan of a Player by MLS

A club may loan any player from its Senior Roster or Supplemental Roster to a non-MLS club, subject to League discretion. During the loan period, the club will receive roster relief but not Salary Budget relief unless otherwise determined pursuant to the loan agreement.

If the player is recalled from his loan, the club must have an available roster slot in order for the player to be eligible for MLS League Season games.

If the loaned player is an International Player, then his replacement may be an International Player and occupy an international roster slot.

do you really think this club is going to pay for a DP that doesn't pl.... nevermind.

Jones coming back next year will be very helpful.

As much as I like Parks, i wouldn't be mad if we moved on from him. His consistency this year has been poor and his non-chalant style of play only looks good when it pays off and all too often this season, it just didn't.

Sands has been pretty good this season, I think. His only flaw is his lack of athleticism. But he makes up for it most of the time because he reads the game well. If he ends up going to europe to chase his dream of playing there and getting back on the national team, I can't blame him, but I'd be happy to keep him.

I also wouldn't be mad if Wolf left. The guy seems to work hard but his productivity wasn't great for the 2nd half of the season and I never felt like things were going to happen when he got the ball. If our attack is going to scare the pants off defenses across the league, we need wingers on both sides who will disrupt a defensive block almost every time they get the ball. Wolf isn't that guy. Jones looked like he was starting to become that guy. I just didn't see enough of Ojeda and Fernandez to see if they could be those guys.

It's amazing to me to think that if Bakrar had produced this season, it would have been very likely we would have never seen martinez on the field and he'd be buried on the bench, much like bakrar was. What if Ojeda and Fernandez needed some consistent minutes to show what they can do?

We have a roster of 28 players (i think) and we literally used 15 of them. Over a full season, that's just not good enough. Fatigue and exhaustion would definitely come into play and I think that contributed to our poor performances and lack of sharpness at times.

I hope Maxi comes back next season for another year, but I don't think we should be relying on him to run the attack. Santi needs to own the 10.

I honestly don't mind if Risa goes too, but i'd be surprised if the club tries to move him on.
