2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Our European scouting seems heavily focused on Scandinavia and the Balkans.
I’m not necessarily complaining, but I’m not necessarily happy about it either.
I get the approach of cast your nets where there’s not so many other fishermen, but I’m not convinced it’s working.

Have you seen Scandanavian teams in Europe? I agree with your assessment.

We also do have that south american talent though, so it's more like Scandinavia, Balkans, South America (brazil/argentina)

For sure about Brazil/Argentina, which is why I focused my remarks to European scouting. And there's obviously players from scattered other sources: CR, Uruguay, Austria.

And in case I wasn't clear, I'm referring to the player's home country, not where he plays. I'm not at all surprised we don't get guys playing in the Big 5 leagues, but a little surprised we rarely get players born in those countries but not good enough for their top home league. I guess those countries are just so well scouted there's too much competition for them? Also, it doesn't seem the rest of MLS has a lot of mid-tier talent guys from Eng/Fra/ Spa/Ger/Ita either. I know in England those players tend to stay in the Championship or even League 1, and maybe that's true in other countries as well.
But I'm surprised there aren't a couple or three dozen or so guys from that cohort who fancy the idea of spending 3-5 years in the USA in their 20s and make a point of coming here. From what I understand, it's made quite clear to players whether they have a real chance at making the PL or Bundesliga etc. by the time they are 20 or so, sometimes younger, so they shouldn't hang around for that reason.

Or maybe there is a group of such players here and I'm just not noticing.

i don't enjoy the lack of news either, but given that we don't really have any roster spots right now (other than a DP spot from magno's loan), what more can Lee be doing?

we need to see some outgoing transfers before we can see some incoming and while we've seen some rumors of jovan leaving, nothing is official yet.

Did the Forums update include a post character limit?

Meaning there is an extensive amount Lee (or given his likely lack of autonomy, the CFG decision makers) can and should be doing to improve this roster right now. Going into the season with a massively flawed roster while losing our most reliable player, and improving no where on the field is not promising or even fair to a new manager. If it takes additional unloading, that’s fine. That’s part of the job. Our roster being a log jam is not an excuse. Fix it. If the master plan is to just hope that kids do better, that’s extremely risky and not putting the club in the best position to succeed. It can even be a hybrid approach, just sign two reliables - a 10+ goal scorer and and maybe a replacement 6 - and otherwise let the kids run wild - at least it increases the chances for success. Again, it’s probably mostly not Lee’s fault, but someone can be doing a whole lot more to set us up to win. Or at least admit we are half-assing it until we need to sell tickets to the new stadium, which is probably the plan.

I'm not disagreeing that the roster needs some work and Lee and others could be doing something (they very well could be, we just aren't hearing about it). I think those of us here and other fans can all agree the roster could use at least one exciting signing to make the team better. All I was trying to say is that we can't really expect to see incoming transfer news without making room on the roster. Unless we are gonna make a DP signing to take magno's spot, which I honestly don't see happening this window.

I do think Lee probably thinks the roster is pretty good as is (he has said as much in his interviews, I believe) and hopes a new coach will come in and make the youngins shine. In the mean time, we're just signing homegrowns and former homegrowns to fill up roster spots in hopes we don't lose them for free.

Yeah, not really taking issue with what you said, just explaining what I meant by the character limit - meaning there’s a lot to say about our current roster.

okay so see up until i read your explanation there I had absolutely no idea what you meant by that.
...Then about 10 seconds before reading this, I thought "Oh! I get it! He meant 'there's no character limit, and the roster might have a player cap but that doesn't mean we can't SIGN players'!!!" and then read your actual meaning and now feel quite dumb. lol

i didn't get it either at first. haha

Other clubs have signed new DPs, and sometimes had to scramble when the loan wasn’t extended or converted to a transfer.. but they avoid the hole in the roster.
We don’t even replace non-DPs on loan. Taty. Sands 1.
We’re just, “ You want out? Cool. We’ll loan you out get nothing back and keep a hole in our roster.l just in case.”

we filled Sands's roster spot already. we signed arroye, that keeper from toronto, and prince. that brings us to 29 people on the active roster (unless I miscounted) with magno gone.

i'm in the same boat as everyone else. I think the roster needs changes and Lee has mismanaged the roster. I don't care if it's a CFG directive or whatever, Lee is the guy we can point to. If he doesn't have the guts to stand up to CFG to make us a winning team, that's on him as well.

We're carrying way too many players on the active roster who will never see game time. We have 9 roster spots taken by homegrowns who are not contributing. That's not counting the bubble wrapped mcfarlane.

we'll likely end up signing max murray too, which would bring us to 30 (Unless he ends up signing for the IIs, which sucks for him cause he probably would have played at another team).

I would love for the team to do a whole bunch of transfers soon. Especially with an exciting, immediate impact type of player. but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Lee said the roster is good so let him roll with it. I think Nick squeezed a lot of wins out of a flawed roster last season. The rest of the league is getting better and we are holding steady while we bet on a new coach and a bunch of 19 and 20-year-olds to figure it out. This is the culmination of Lee's multiyear rebuild so let's see how it goes.

If things do go bad however there are no excuses for Lee. I don't want to hear that Lee deserves more time because Sands and Jovan left and new coaches need time to come up to speed. Lee knew Sands was going for months so he had plenty of time to have a replacement ready. Lee fired Cushing so if we stumble with a new coach that's on Lee too. If we are not as good or better than last season Lee needs to go.

I'm not well-versed in MLS roster rules especially how all these homegrown players count to the numbers or not but we surly must have some spots:

Unreplaced Departures from last season
- Jasson
- Magno

Departures this off-season
- Sands
- Barrazza
- Hope-Gund

Likely Departures soon
- McFarlane
- Jovan

That's 5 confirmed departures and 2 likely additional departures. I honestly don't understand how we don't have roster spots.
