2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

I'm going with 5.

Someone totally random is going to pick up a brace, then tack another one home in the next game, then not score again for the rest of the season.
I'm going with Wolf
I will take the over. (One of those I hope I lose)

More crickets from David Lee today I presume. At this point any outside MLS addition will join the squad by mid March the earliest.

Why bring in proven players when you have half a dozen homegrowns and super draft guys sitting on the bench? (sarcasm alert)

Why waste your time with proven players when your scouting and development systems are so good that you're cranking out massive success stories like Magno, Jovan, Ojeda, and Fernandez.

Is this the 1st time the league has ever released most of this information outside of maybe an initial signing press release? Especially the contract expiration years, I'm pretty sure I've only seen that sometimes reported by media, but never from the league.

They did it last year too, I believe. It's great that they're doing this.

So we have 5 senior roster spots open and a lot of GAM, theoretically, between transfers and the GAM allowance for using the U-22 route. If we are willing to replace Talles, we have 1 DP spot. If we are willing to replace Jovan, we have 2 U-22 spots. Plus two other senior roster spots available. There's room to make moves if David Lee chooses to.

The summer window opens Jul 24 this year and closes August 21. They moved it later to align better with other leagues. We have 11 home games, 65% of the total, before the window opens, and 13 (76%) by its close. Apart from the historic difficulty of succeeding in MLS playoffs from mid-table positions, that's a lot of mediocre or worse soccer to pay for under your season ticket invoice. As bad as 2023 was, I can accept the circumstances that caused it. Lee needs to address things sooner rather than later or it's a real slap in the face to fans to do it again. It is already unacceptable, but fix it fast and we'll put it behind us. I don't want to pay for 13 crappy games and hope for 1 or 2 playoff wins. Given how random the playoffs are, NYCFC needs to get back to providing an excellent team all season year after year. That is the simplest way to provide STH value.

I completely agree with you. By the 2nd day of the summer window, we'll have played 24 games. Additions must happen this window.

Bare minimum we need a starting quality 10 that can move move Maxi back to a 30 minute backup / mid-week fresh legs replacement. I'd also like to see us bring in someone that can beat out O'Toole for the starting LB position. While I'm at it, can we also get a starting level CB and another veteran defensive midfielder?

let me introduce you to draft pick cavallo, draft pick murray, and a veteran of the NYCFC playing style, jonny shore! :D

According to this document: We have 2 DPs or U22s unavailable on loan.

The other 29 teams in MLS have a grand total of 3. Combined.

What? that's not true at all. how do all the other 29 teams have a grand total of 3 combined DP/U-22 players?

There are a handful with 1 available DP, like us. There are another handful who aren't using U-22 at all or only have 1. Toronto and Columbus arguably are in worse shape with regards to DP and U-22. But there is a lot of variation. Maybe i'm misunderstanding your statement.

3 DP/U22 on loan

Nice breakdown from HRB on the roster info release: New York City FC 2025 roster profile released: 5 Takeaways

I found this tidbit to be a particularly interesting glimmer of hope:
By selecting the U22 Initiative roster construction model, NYCFC also receives an extra $2 million in GAM, with that specific $2M of GAM not eligible to be rolled over into future seasons – something teams can now do, since GAM no longer expires, per the latest batch of MLS rules changes.

So at least $2M worth of spending should be coming our way unless the team plans to just throw money away.
