so if we still haven't paid a good portion of the transfer fee.... why is that? does anybody know?

and if so, does that change how we assess cushing's use of him this season on top of his attitude and work ethic?

We are playing the exact scenario where it was extremely useful to not pay the entire fee.
Most likely reason we know of.
Others are that either Red Star or NYC had a financial, legal or regulatory reason to spread the payments and they worked it out by NYC paying an appropriate extra amount to account for the time value.

I don’t see how. It doesn’t change the relevant facts including Jovan’s fitness and effort, the team’s performance, the need to balance youth development with the best record possible, etc.
Whether you think Nick did well or poorly I don’t see how the fee structure changes any of that.

Mijatovic has shown a lovely first touch? Good spatial awareness? Clever play on the ball? What color is the sky in his world?

Hey now he is very aware of the 10 yards of space he slow jogs around in for 90% of his time on the pitch.

I wonder if Thiago Andrade will come back from overseas and play for Toronto just to spite us. 😆

Toronto wanted him for the potential sell fee. I don't think Thiago is ever going to play in MLS again, but now Toronto can earn the profit from selling him.

He was no longer on our active roster so we don't earn another U22 slot for him, the only real consequence for NYCFC is not earning the sell fee they were likely to utilize within the next 12 months, if they were even going to sell him.

Yeah, I was just cracking a little joke there. I think you're absolutely right: most likely, he's not coming back to MLS.

He's only 24, though. He might get another shot back home, or maybe in one of the secondary European leagues. He didn't exactly tear it up in China, but he might be one of those guys who just needs to be in the right position on the right squad.

Yep. Transfermarkt also has his value around $1 million, so even if Toronto does get to sell him, it's such a small transfer value as to not really be important.

I would bet this has been in the works for a while, which is why NYCFC surprisingly exercised his option and left him exposed. Good asset management to ensure no one of consequence on our fairly deep roster got picked. Shrewd work by David Lee if this was in the works for a while and if he was in on it.

That's my read: a little sacrificial lamb game theory. Give them someone they could grab and flip at no cost and with no strings attached so we could leave some other guys out there at no risk.

I can see a scenario where this started with Toronto calling NYCFC over Thiago's availability, then NYCFC roped in San Diego so SD could receive the allocation money to make it worth their while, and to protect everyone else since NYCFC didn't want to lose anyone off their roster.

Makes sense. We may even be wrong about Thiago not returning to MLS. It's at least possible Toronto wants to actually kick the tires rather than sell him on immediately. Or they could want him for trade bait within the league.

But I think the most likely outcome is they move him and pocket the profit. You can always find a buyer for pace.
