Can someone who knows more than me about these things explain why Okoli wouldn't be protected?

Because there's only 11 spots and he's #12 behind Shelton, apparently.

There's no major, major fuck up here, but this list just smells of the aggregate of a number of mismanaged transactions.

From looking at the unprotected list, could see potential interest for Mena, Okoli, or Saunders. Gomez also to a lesser extent.

A club might also be interested in Lurch as he's very cheap and has some skills, potentially to be a backup. (Although he does take int'l slot).

Dream Salary Scenario:

- Mena is taken in the Expansion Draft. Frees up an International Spot and 200K+
- Josh Saunders is waived. Frees up 150K+
- Mix is traded???

NYCFC is really rolling the dice knowing we will only lose one player...... if it isn't Saunders, then he's getting the buyout.

How can Saunders be waived? We'd have to buy his contract out since the team extended it with a new deal last year.

Hmmm...... what if the paperwork for his contract hasn't yet been finalized (until after the draft is over)? He is going from the USL to MLS so lawyer/agent has to get involved. Loophole to keep him?

I wonder if there is some rule that players signed within a certain time period prior to the list/draft are excluded like Okoli. That would explain the baffling pre draft signing and the lack of protection.

Would be worth checking if any other signings from the last couple of weeks (if any) show up on the list.
