General MLS Discussion

So when Atlanta comes back to NY, will he be met with love or vitriol, do you think? I hope the fans show nothing but love. Yeah he left mid-season, but he is also the coach that won us the cup. and stripped for us!

i dont think many people were overly pissed. perhaps annoyed but the title he won will be remembered first imo.

Am i the only one that doesn't understand what the significance of knowing the GAM is?

I was confused too but the article was helpful:

"This is a step in the right direction for MLS but it’s not all the way there, yet. As such, it’s important to understand how much we can use these new data points when we discuss MLS teams, roster building and salary cap dynamics. If we think of MLS rosters as a Wheel of Fortune answer, we’ve just filled in R, S, T, L, N and E. For some teams, if we buy the right vowel or guess the right letter, that might be enough to solve the puzzle. For others, we’ll still be a bit off from being able to solve."

"Now, at least, we have player classifications (TAM, DP, U22, homegrown); the number of guaranteed years in a contract (which helps with budget calculations and also factors into trade value) and option years; we also know how much GAM each team has to play with.

We can at least start to play around with what roster flexibility teams might have."

As a side note it's annoying that nytimes doesn't let me use my gift links for athletic articles.

Thanks. Couldn't read bc of the paywall.

So basically it's just a way for us to help glean where the team might be using the gam, potentially, to show us what the team is or isn't utilizing. I'll leave that for the others here to determine. My expertise is kicking players off of islands. And profile puns, apparently.

Releasing GAM is a big deal for all fans but it's probably most important to the people trying to cover the league and write articles about team cap situations and possible moves in the off-season. You have to feel for them, every other capped league in the US releases all their cap info but MLS writers are stuck trying to guestimate their way through a sea of endlessly complex roster rules with a fragmented and incomplete set of information.

Unfortunately, the last big piece of information needed is TAM and given that TAM spending is mostly discretionary I fear it will be a long time before we get any details on that. If they publish TAM people will have a much clearer picture of which teams are spending and which teams are being cheap. Can't imagine the cheap owners will be excited about that type of transparency.

He should be applauded. The coach of our first MLS Cup. I would clap him, personally. He's a Club legend even though he left mid-season. Plus he was the most fun personality we've ever had in that position.

Idk why people are acting like this is some illegal devil shit. Managers move to teams in the same league all the time. He's not moving to a rival team, he's moving to Atlanta.

Wish him all the best, but not against us! ☺️
I think it’s more that we are also coachless currently and would have liked him back. It’s like our ex decided to go to the same dance we are going to with someone else when we still yearn for the good old days we had with them.

I, for one, welcome him back to MLS and hope he finds success except against us and except when we have a chance at the cup. Then it's all about us!

He gave us a cup and navigated a difficult covid time. Much respect to the guy even if i never loved his sub strategies haha.

Watch, we're gonna hire tata martino. hahaha
