General MLS Discussion

so....is this not on MLS season pass? i have to subscribe to Apple TV?

That's crazy, but ... yes, it would appear its not part of MLS Season Pass.

One would think it should be offered to MLS Season Pass subscribers who aren't Apple TV+ subscribers, but what do I know, I'm just a consumer trying not to be ripped off by every business I interact with.

It is breathtaking how Miami never ceases to try to make money off Messi being there.

A game days after the start of preseason against Club America in Vegas AT THE HUGE FOOTBALL STADIUM has absolutely nothing to do with getting ready for the season and everything to do with trying to make a quick buck. It's so grossly a money-grab.

I just looked at ticketmaster -- prices in the upper deck are $150 in midfield and $100 in the corners. For a preseason game five days into camp. Complete insanity.

They're playing a friendly. That's part of preseason. They just have the ability to make money of ticket sales. We'd be doing the same thing if we had a super star on Messi's level.

They signed them. They can do what they want. I don't really understand the hate. Messi is doing a lot to bring eyes to MLS.

He is, but I think Miami is wasting an opportunity to grow the game by making every Messi-tangential experience so premium. They are doing nothing to convert Messi fans into MLS fans, they're just using Messi's fans as a bank.

Charging $100 for an upper-deck ticket in a football stadium to a friendly match in January when tickets at Yankee Stadium are usually $45 to sit right near the field in the regular season is damn-near extortionate. I think I'll be glad when the Lionel Messi "experience" is over and things go back to normal around this league.

Near-extortionate would be forcing season ticket holders to buy a random early pre-season friendly for high prices to keep your tickets.
Holding a one-off friendly in another tourist city at prices that fans can take or leave without consequences is simply squeezing every dollar possible out of your assets. Annoying? Yes. Unethical? No.

With that being said, I'll be happy to see the end of the Messi era!

Any team would be doing the same. In the end it's a business. There's nothing stopping them from charging high prices and if people will pay them why not? It's a one off. Make your money while you can.

Do I like that MLS has so much focus on Messi? No. And I love Messi. But I understand that his being here will bring eyes that normally wouldn't give this league a chance and hopefully some of them will stay fans after he is gone.

I just don't understand the hate. It's a business. Marketing your current your strongest product is what they do. No one is forcing you to watch all their games or pay for them. You see a splash page on the home screen. First time this off season. That's not a big deal IMO.

The band The Clash agreed to lower royalties for the triple disc album Sandinista! so it could be released at a lower price closer to a standard single disc album. It cost a lot more to record and more to manufacture. Record company had to make that money back somehow.

Lots of people criticize Miami but almost nobody criticizes Messi, who doesn’t even give us 3 games for the price of one.

Doesn’t make sense.

Just checked in and MLS Season Pass is carrying the Inter friendly tonight. Not sure if that was mentioned in this thread. I'm going to try and stay up and do a little scouting. ;)

It occurred to me this morning that the Messi/Miami Las Vegas game is probably as close as we get in real life to Robert Nozick's Wilt Chamberlain hypothetical in Anarchy, State and Utopia, and your reaction to one is probably pretty close to your reaction to the other.

Had to look that up. I’m perfectly fine with this friendly and also not opposed to a certain amount of wealth redistribution. Also in this case there’s not a “Messi Tip Jar.” Messi gets paid the same regardless of whether anyone shows up.

Imagine going to a game in this weather

From everything I’ve read there would not be league games in January.

Understood. But we all live here in February and March. Those months are awful weather-wise. Even our April home games last year weren't necessarily enjoyable weather (40s-50s with rain for both of them, if memory serves). Let's say they play November-December here in NYC. You will get some decent 50-degree days, but you'll also get some 35-degree days. Is anyone going to the 10th game of a regular-season where 16 of 29 teams make the playoffs when it's 40 degrees and rainy outside?
