General MLS Discussion

yes its true. even wrestlers like CM punk are out there kissing the Chicago city flag. or random fans in different events are waving it if they from there.

wish they can incorporate our city colors more in our jerseys ( though it seems not as many like the city flag or are aware of it like I am), but it is what is is.
Yeah, Chicago's flag is great. Our flag sucks.

D.C. also has a cool flag and the new Milwaukee flag is super dope.

I still like our flag, just that no one seems to care for it or aware of it.
Not that I know anything about flag designs. But my personal opinion is it’s lazy just to take the state/city/nation seal and stick it into the middle of a plain (usually blue) background. I appreciate that the nyc flag has orange and white but I still don’t see the appeal if you have the seal. I guess it’s more timeless?

i agree state flag is "lazy" as many states just have seal in middle of navy blue.

as for the city, my understanding is that prior to the design it was just the seal, it would be on a white flag. They added the blue and orange to reflect the colors from the new amsterdam flag ( dutch settlement) which were horizontal, and the nyc one is vertical.

Felipe Hernandez (SKC) has been suspended indefinitely for gambling on MLS matches.

This seems like one of those stories that could become a really....really big deal.

In what way? Not asking sarcastically, just feel like I’m missing something between the lines. I read it as an individual/isolated occurrence (accepting the findings as true unless/until other information comes to light)

It's a huge black mark on the league, having players openly betting on games. Pete Rose was a HOF-caliber baseball player but will never get in b/c of gambling on games. This guy isn't Pete Rose, but it's a really bad look for the league. I think the suspension is actually pretty light; I'd throw him out of the league immediately.

I think this is more in line with Paul Horning being suspended when he was with the Packers for betting on college games and NFL games. Pete Rose suspension was a bigger issue as a manager could rig the game more.

Agree with Joe_Cos Joe_Cos here. It’s also different in that Hernandez came to the team; Rose refused to admit anything for decades. My understanding is that MLB had suspension on the table if Rose admitted and got help. And the feds would drop the tax-related charges and work out a way to get his debts resolved. But he declined.

I mean he's not wrong. And he's gonna get fined for this and nothing is going to happen.

you can have the "inside PRO" videos all you want, but if it doesn't change the outcome of the state of refereeing, then what's the point?

The quality of this league is increasing faster than the officiating can keep up, and we now have substandard referees based on the quality of the league. I don't know how you fix that, but refereeing in this league just isn't good enough anymore.

We really need a home grown system for refs lol
I think the problem is that we ONLY have a home grown system right now. We need a designated referee and targeted allocation referee system to attract high quality young South American referees and aging European referees. I can't wait to see the Maltese Pierluigi Collina in the center of the pitch.

But seriously, the referees union (which remember is separate from PRO, which is essentially a staffing agency) has made it impossible to bring experienced officials from other countries.

ESPN article about this, love the complaint that “we’re tired of getting emails the day after the game saying sorry we were wrong.”

sounds SO familiar.

I too would like an independent, outside council to conduct an investigation into PRO.

I've said before that MLS/PRO has it in for NYCFC, but the more it happens around the league the more I think it's just a dumpster fire referee pool that we have.

The reason we, and teams like Miami, feel it more is that when you don't score a lot of goals and don't win a lot of games, having a referee mistake take those away hurts a lot more than when you do score a lot and win a lot. If a refereeing error led to New England dropping points, they probably wouldn't mind much. But teams that are struggling for points already and are victims of bad officiating will feel much more hard done by these errors.

Bad refs is definitely the biggest thing holding back MLS right now. It would be improving and progressing much more if not for PRO refs being so shitty
